Editor's Notes
Strategic review following arrival of new chief exec
External feedback: programmes well-known and well-regarded – but difficult to understand what/who BSA is for
Refreshed vision
Today, will focus on existing programmes. But remember we’re also interested in new opportunities to deliver our vision – ideas welcome
32 Branches across the UK , all volunteer led; join your nearest Branch
Put on your events based on your own ideas and also on ideas we suggest e.g. emerging policy
Branches put on an eclectic mix of events for the general public, including community events, SciBars, public lectures, film screenings, craft events, trips and tours, etc
Becoming a branch volunteer will allow you to develop skills in areas such as event management, science communication, publicity and fundraising.
Become an event organiser – get your event listed on our site; receive marketing materials; benefit from our national marketing
We also do campaigns and national-scale projects, some of which will be relevant to your interests e.g. Worm Watch Lab; Nature’s Calendar
Grants available for schools and for community organisations – across UK, with dedicated funding available for orgs in Scotland & Wales
If you like events, consider submitting a proposal to run an event at the British Science Festival – or the many other high quality science Festivals that have sprung up across the UK
30,000 Awards a year
Discovery, Bronze, Silver, Gold
Silver/Gold – researchers can also support CREST celebration/certificate awarding events, with assessment and judging – and build up to being a Project Mentor
Discover/Bronze – offer to help run an activity e.g. Community Garden challenge
Partner with other activity providers e.g. Nuffield Research Placements
Can also partner with schools competitions e.g. students who submitted entries to Physiological Society’s ‘The Science of Life’ competition could put their work towards a Silver Award
Offer to help run CREST Star activities in your local primary school
Free and paid-for activities available for schools
Activities also suitable for other settings eg Cubs & Brownies; community fairs; family festivals; etc
If you run your own activities, consider linking them to the CREST Star scheme – adds credibility to your activity
For all schools work, encourage you to sign up as a STEM Ambassador with STEMNET
Learn more about science communication by attending the conference
Consider submitting a proposal for a session – we look for a mixture of ‘Do It’, ‘Discuss It’ & ‘Debate It’
You can read reports of previous years’ conferences on our website.
Key themes in science communication at the moment seem to be reaching under-served audiences and effective evaluation.
Dates/location of 2015 conference tbc. Will be a call for proposals over winter.
11 this year; I’ve picked ones working closest to your area of interest. All have a placement of a few weeks’ long, plus come to the Festival.
Also we work on specific projects in response to funders’ interests e.g. Engineers’ Engage – happy to partner with others
Sections – 16 sections covering all scientific disciplines e.g. medical science, biological science, agricultural and food science, chemistry and general science
