Hemoglobin is broken down through erythrocyte lysis, releasing its components of globin amino acids, iron, heme, and porphyrin. Heme is further broken down by heme oxygenase into biliverdin and then bilirubin, releasing carbon monoxide and iron in the process. This overview summarizes the biochemical catabolism of hemoglobin and heme.
