Kernel Recipes 2013 - Virtual Network over TRILL (VNT) : Design, implementati...Anne Nicolas
IaaS Providers need next-generation virtualized networks, providing large-scale multi-tenancy services and meeting new requirements in terms of efficiency and availability. The main limitation of current network architectures mainly comes from inadequate design standards.
In this presentation, we present a TRILL based multi-tenant network architecture for virtualized data center networks. This architecture allows the best of both layers (bridging and routing), thus building a large-scale layer-2 network while ensuring scalability, efficiency, fault-tolerance and simplified management.
This enables also the creation of large numbers of logical networks within a virtualized data center.
The kernel part of our solution is currently developped in the Linux kernel.

The Evolving Data Center Network: Open and Software-DefinedDell World
Can the network be managed as easily and cost-effectively as a server or PC? We think so. That is why Dell is working to make this possible through our Open Networking initiative. In this session, learn how Dell can help you move to a software-defined network and make your data center more agile and efficient. We will discuss new open networking platforms ranging from 1GbE to 100GbE with next-generation, multi-rate architectures and a choice of operating systems. We will also explore how these new network solutions from Dell help enable private/hybrid cloud, Hadoop, convergence, and VDI implementations.
As service providers increasingly provide cloud-based services to enterprises and small businesses in virtual and multi-tenant environments, their security strategies must continually evolve to detect and mitigate emerging threats. In the VMDC reference architecture, physical and virtual infrastructure components such as networks (routers and switches), network-based services (firewalls and load balancers) - and computing and storage resources are shared among multiple tenants, creating shared multi-tenant environments.
Security is especially important in these environments because sharing physical and virtual resources increases the risk of tenants negatively impacting other tenants. Cloud deployment models must include critical regulatory compliance such as Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
The VMDC Cloud Security 1.0 solution enables customers to:
• Detect, analyze, and stop advanced malware and advanced persistent threats across the attack continuum.
• Consistently enforce policies across networks and accelerate threat detection and response.
• Access global intelligence using the right context to make informed decisions and take fast,
appropriate action.
• Comply with security requirements for regulatory requisites such as FISMA, HIPAA, and PCI.
• Support secure access controls to prevent business losses.
• Secure data center services using application and content security.
The presentation provides a topical overview of the areas to be looked at when conducting a Firewall, Router, or Switch configuration review. This presentation is based on a slide deck I prepared for an internal Learning & Growth session in March of 2014. More detailed material is available from the "References" slide.
MetaFabric™ Architecture Virtualized Data Center: Design and Implementation G...Juniper Networks
The benefits of virtualization are driving data center operators to rethink their legacy data center networks and look for new ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency in the data center. Moving from a legacy network to a state-of-the-art solution allows you to deploy new applications in seconds rather than days, weeks, or months. If you want to harness the power of virtualization in your data center network, this guide will help you to achieve your goal.
Project: Penetration Testing Report
(20 Points)
Scenario
You have been hired as a junior security consultant and have been tasked
with performing an in-house penetration test to demonstrate your readiness
to support the audit of a large corporate client that has employed your firm’s
services. Conducting a penetration test consists of 1) planning the test, 2)
preparing your test tools, 3) performing the test, 4) analyzing the data, and
5) writing up and communicating your findings. The project will document
your notional penetration test.
Project OVERVIEW
Your project will be submitted in four sections. The final deliverable will
include all combined sections:
Pre-Test: Deployment of attack tools and victim host (Week 2)
Testing (Mapping and Scanning): Mapping the target environment
and conducting a vulnerability scan (Week 4)
Testing (Exploitation): Gaining Access through a vulnerability
identified during the vuln scan (Week 6)
Analysis and Reporting: Communicating findings and providing
mitigation recommendation (Week 8)
Supporting Details
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the student’s ability to:
Build and deploy an attack OS (Kali Linux or other similar operating
system (OS))
Configure and deploy a victim host (Metasploitable, Broken Web
Apps, Mutillidae, other exploitable OS or virtual machine (VM))
Conduct a vulnerability scan
Research a hardware or software vulnerability
Discuss how the vulnerability can be exploited
Exploit the vulnerability
Evaluate the risk posed by this vulnerability
Provide a recommended compensating control to mitigate the
vulnerability
Students may choose to submit the project using one of two options - each
option has pros and cons that students should evaluate before making their
decision.
1. Local Lab: Requires access to a dedicated computer in which
students have sufficient:
o access (continued access to the same machine for the
duration of the course)
o permissions (administrative permissions to install software)
o storage (minimum of 30 GB available to the student for VM
storage)
o memory (minimum of 8 GBs)
o bandwidth (downloading large VMs can take considerable
time even with high-speed Internet connections)
2. Remote Lab: Utilizes the online lab environment used to complete
the weekly course labs
Part 1 – Pre-Test: Deployment of attack
tools and victim host (Week 2)
PROJECT SECTION 1 DETAILS: The first part of your project consists of
preparing and deploying your testing tools (the attack OS) and the
vulnerable host that will serve as your attack target. Instead of requiring the
use of two physical machines, we will utilize one physical machine and we
will leverage virtualization software to install a hypervisor (VirtualBox,
VMware, etc.) along with two (2) “guest” operating systems. For those new
to virtualization, we are simply using our “host OS” (Window, Mac, Linux) and
installing a virtualization “software application.
Protect Your End-of-Life Windows Server 2003 Operating SystemSymantec
End of Support is Not the End of Business When software vendors announce a product end-of-life (EOL), customers typically have 24 to 30 months to plan and execute their migration strategies. This period is typically referred to as limited support. After the last day of support (also known as “end of support life date”), the product becomes obsolete, and the vendor will no longer automatically issue security patches. Customers have the option to purchase “extended or custom support” from the vendor after this date.
In many instances, the window for the availability of vendor support for the EOL product could be shorter than the time it would take for the customer to effectively migrate applications and processes to a new platform.
Customers may also be running custom applications that may not be compatible with the new platform. These gaps potentially expose unsupported systems to zero-day threats and new malware attacks. In order to address these potential risks, businesses will need to make some hard decisions:
• Run the applications in the unsupported platform.
• Execute an aggressive migration strategy for the mission-critical applications.
• Purchase an expensive extended support contract from the software vendor.
• Implement a security solution to harden and monitor the unsupported systems.

Acme Enterprise Scenario Residency WeekAcme Enterprise is a pr.docxMARK547399
Acme Enterprise Scenario Residency Week
Acme Enterprise is a private company that is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO). Prior to going public Acme must be in compliance with: GDPR, PCI DSS, and SOX. Acme is in the water purification business with new technologies that purify water in any form whether it is sewage, ocean, lake etc.
Part of its IPO process is to show due diligence and due care. Acme has identified your team to conduct a risk assessment and analysis of its information technology infrastructure to uncover any threats and exposures and provide mitigations and controls to reduce those uncovered threat/exposures, so it can have a successful IPO.
Using the Network Infrastructure design of the Acme Enterprise you are to assess risk of Acme’s:
1. Perimeter Security
2. Network Security
3. Endpoint Security
4. Application Security
5. Data Security
6. Operations
7. Policy Management
Acme Perimeter Security
Acme is currently protected by two dual Dynamic Stateful Inspection Firewalls that are configured in active and stand by mode. Acme is also configured to use PAT (port address translation) where 200.200.200.1 represents Acme on the public Internet. Acme translates this public IP through its clustered firewall to the internal IP space of 10.100.0.0/16 giving Acme 65334 useable IP addresses.
As part of Acme’s infrastructure, it also accesses cloud services for its business office tools through Office 365 and uses Dropbox for end user’s storage. Acme uses a web hosting service for its web front end and ecommerce which is connected to a back-end Oracle Database using enterprise MySQL. The database administrators have full access to all database information, but they lack oversight from anyone else.
There are two DMZ’s, but they are not utilized.
Network Security
Acme has a collapsed core design which means all internal LAN routing and Internet access occurs on its distribution level devices. This means, wireless access, web proxy access, access control lists and entries are located at this layer of the infrastructure. Currently Acme is using WPA 2 (wireless protected access 2) for is wireless security. The web proxy is configured with the following: General, Limited, and Exclusive Internet access. Each of these categories dictates what type of Internet access an end user will experience if belongs to one of these groups.
The Local area network uses the IP block in the following way: 10.100.1.0/24 User VLAN, 10.100.2.0/24 Research and Development VLAN.
Current access control lists are permit 10.100.2.0 0.0.0.255, permit 10.100.1.0 0.0.0.255. All other devices use the rest of the unallocated IP block of 10.100.0.0/16.
Also, all IP space is statically assigned. There is one default route to Internet but users of complain about access to internal services.
Endpoint Security
There is a mixture of MAC and Windows systems, XP, 7, and 10. JAMF is used to control and monitor MAC systems, the Windows devices.
