Franz Kafka was a German-language writer from Prague who wrote novels and short stories in the early 20th century. Some of his most famous works include The Metamorphosis, in which the protagonist Gregor Samsa wakes up transformed into a giant insect, and The Trial, which explores themes of isolation and the individual confronting an impersonal and inscrutable bureaucracy. Though his works attracted little attention during his lifetime, Kafka is now considered one of the most influential authors of the 20th century and his works have inspired many other authors and artists with their themes of alienation, absurdity, and the individual struggling against powerful external forces.
