Junagadh Tourism is that bridge which connects the
highly excited, adventurous people with the nostalgic
history of Junagadh and the nature eagerly waiting to
be explored.
Junagadh Tourism acts as a stethoscope for those who
want to hear the throbbing of the heart of nature.
It acts as a smelling aid for those who want to smell
the essence of nature which can be experienced only in
those deep forests of Susan GIR.

5. Jain Deraser
Shri Girnar Sidhee Kosher is the famous religious center of
Jain community.
Thus place is sacred & pious as it is related with 3
Kalyanka – (I) Diksha (ii) Gina (iii) Moksha of 22nd
Teerthankar Bhagwan Neminath.
About 72 crore & 700 Muniraj like son of Shri Krishna –
Pradyumna Kumar, Shambhu Kumar, Aniruddha Kumar
achieved salvation at this place.

6. Gir National Park, Devalia
Devalia Safari Park also known as Gir Interpretation
Zone - Devalia, is the establishment of particular
eco-tourism zone to reduce overload of tourists from
Gir Forest Visit and to provide whole wildlife of Gir
at single place in safe habitats.
This Interpretation Zone comprises of 412 ha chain
link fenced area which is regarded as ‘Gir in a
nutshell’ covering all habitat types and wildlife of
Gir.
The basic aim of creating this facility is to provide an
opportunity of viewing lions and other animals in
their natural habitat within a short period of time at
cheaper rates.
There are animals like Asiatic lions, Leopards, Blue
Bull, Samba, Chital, Jackal, Black buck, Wild Boar

7. etc. The presence of Savona habitat and other flora is
also another attraction of the area.
Jata Sankar Water Fall
, a gem of a hill station in Madhya Pradesh, is
famous for its caves and waterfalls.
The unique geological features of the Hills in this
region has resulted in the formation of a large
number of waterfalls; caves both natural as well as
manmade are to be seen all over the region.
The Jata Shankar Temple is one of the most revered
holy places in this.

About Junagadh
We have many historical cities in Gujarat and other
states of India, but Junagadh is unique among them, as it
comprises of historical monuments starting from the very
ancient age (500 BC) till the most recent history of
partition of India in 1947 AD.
This city, as the name suggests, is a city of old
fort.

11. Solanki dynasty

The Solanki, of the Chalukya dynasty,
ruled Gujarat in the 11th and 12th
centuries.

Uperkot Fort were both commissioned
by Rah NavghanI (1025- 1044 CE)
Muslims conquered Gujarat in 1299 and
the Sultanate of Gujarat was formed in
1407.
Mahmud Begada (Mahmud Shah I)

13. Mohammad Bahadur Khanji I, who owed
allegiance to the Sultan of Ahmedabad,
founded the state of Junagadh by expelling
the Mughal governor and declaring
independence in 1748.

14. An impressive fort, Uppercut, located on a plateau in the
middle of town, was originally built during the Maryann
dynasty by Chandragupta in 319 BCE The fort remained
in use until the 6th century, when it was covered over for
300 years, then rediscovered in 976 CE The fort was
besieged 16 times over an 800-year period. One
unsuccessful siege lasted twelve years.
Culture
Culture of Junagadh has a blend of festivals, food and religions. The city is
famous for its type of food known as Kathiawad. Junagadh has limited night-life
but people generally like to go for a drive.
Girnartaleti area is favored by most of the population due to cool weather
and peaceful atmosphere.
Junagadh was ruled by Muslim Nawab before the independence because of
that overall culture of Junagadh is blend of both Hindu and Muslim
community.
Her father, Vali Mohammed Babe, was an administrator with the Nawab of
Junagadh.

15. Junagadh has number of theaters and Hindi cinema is very popular.
Gujarati and English movies are also shown by various theaters. Various arts
like Painting, Pottery, woolen clothes etc.
are also exhibited from time to time. Junagadh Agricultural University is host
to various exhibitions like Agricultural Exhibitions and Fair, Farmers Day
camp etc. in SardarSmruti Kendra developed solely for this purpose. City
police also organizes a weapons exhibition annually.

17. SASAN GIR also known as the Gir Forest National Park
and Wildlife Sanctuary is a forest and wildlife sanctuary in
Gujarat, India.
Established in 1965, with a total area of 1412 km² (about 258
km² for the fully protected area (the national park) and 1153
km² for the Sanctuary), the park is located 43 km in the
north-east from Samantha , 65 km to the south-east of
Junagadh and 60 km to south west of Amelia.
History of Sasan Gir
Formerly the hunting reserve of the Nawab of Junagadh, Gir Forest is the
largest compact tract of dry deciduous forest in Gujarat and the only abode of
the Asiatic Lion in the world.
Protection was first given in 1900, when lion numbers were down to a mere
12 individuals! By 1936, the number had increased to 250 animals and today
there are a little over 400 individuals.
Gir was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1965 and given National Park status
ten years later.
Besides the Asiatic Lion, Gir supports a large population of Leopard, and

18. other carnivores include Jungle Cat, Jackal, Striped Hyena, and Common and
Ruddy mongoose.
The herbivores include Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Chowsingha, Chinkara and
Wild Boar.
Over 300 bird species have been recorded here. These include the Shaheen
Falcon, Bonelli's Eagle, Great Horned Owl, Tawny eagle and Blackwinged
Kite.
Grey and Jungle Bush Quail, Grey Partridge, Nightjar, Black-headed Cuckoo
Shrike, Gray Drongo, Pied Woodpecker, Black Ibis, and White-necked Stork
are also found at Gir.
Asiatic Lions (Panthera leopersica)
The close proximity of predators, livestock and humans in
the Gir Forest gives rise to a number of management
problems which threaten the Asiatic lions.

19. There are four large temples located in the Gir Forest,
which is cut by five major roads and a railroad, so that a
considerable volume of people moves through the
protected area.
Lopping of tree branches for firewood is widespread, and
is having a devastating effect, especially upon riverine
forest, which is prime habitat for lionesses with cubs
during the dry season (Ravi Chellam 1993).
Lions have been preying on cattle ever since they first
moved into the area, but there are indications that peoples’
tolerance of lions is coming to an end.

20. Blurred Road to Devalia Forest
The Scots Pine trees of Davilla make a perfect habitat for red
squirrels: the forest is a real stronghold for these frisky animals
in Lowland Scotland.
After you’ve tried spotting them along the Red Squirrel Trail,
you could try finding the four lochs, home to darting dragonflies
and agile otters.
Look out too for relics of past times among the trees, such as an
enigmatic stone monument, where legend the Battle of Bordie
Moor raged in 1038, and a boulder said to have been carved by a
witch’s apron strings.

22. Shree Somnath is first among the twelve Audi Jyotirling
of India.
It is the holy place of the Aadi Jyotirling Shree Somnath
Mahadev and it also has the sacred soil from where Bhagvan
Shri Krishna took his last journey to his neejdham.
Ancient Indian traditions maintain a close relationship of
Somnath with release of Chandra (Moon God) from the
curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati.
Moon was married to Twenty-Seven daughters of Daksha.
However, he favoured Rohini and neglected other queens.
The aggrieved Daksha cursed Moon and the Moon lost
power of light.
With the advice of Prajapita Brahma, Moon arrived at the
Prabhas Teerth and worshipped Bhagvan Shiva.
Pleased with the great penance and devotion of Moon,
Bhagvan Shiva blessed him and relieved him from the curse
of darkness partially, thus causing the periodic waning of
moon.
Pauranic traditions maintain that Moon had built a golden
temple, followed by a silver temple by Ravana, Bhagvan
Shree Krishna is believed to have built Somnath temple with
Sandalwood.

23. Located as it is, it is widely believed that if one were to
sail from here in a straight line, the end of the journey would
be at the North Pole, without having to travel over land. .
History of Somnath
The research based on ancient Indian classical texts show that first
SomnathJyotirlingPran-Pratistha was done on the auspicious third
day of brighter half of Shravan month during the tenth Tretayug of
VaivswatManvantar.
Swami Shri GajananandSaraswatiji, Chairman of ShrimadAadhya
JagadguruShankaracharya Vedic ShodhSansthan, Varanasi
suggested that the said first temple was built 7, 99, 25, 105 years ago
as derived from the traditions of PrabhasKhand of SkandPuran.

24. Thus, this temple is a perennial source of inspiration for millions of
Hindus since time immemorial.
The later sources of history account for several desecrations by
Muslims invaders during eleventh to eighteen century A.D.
The temple was rebuilt every time with the reconstructive spirit of
the people.
The secondf temple, built by the Yadava kings of Vallabhi in
Gujarat, replaced the first one on the same site around 649 CE.

25. Moon God, Soma is one of the three sons of Richie Atria
and Sati ansuya, other two being datary and Durmast.
Moon god was very pious and used to do lot of sat
karma (good deeds) and was great devotee of Lord Shiva.
Prajapati Daksha came to Sage Durmast for marriage of
27 daughters including Rohini.
Now Rohini was similar to nature of Moon God in
devotion and doing satkarma .Moon was married to all 27
daughters of Daksha.
But he was inclined more to Rohini as she was helping in
doing Sat karma and Bhakti.
Jealous by this sort of nature the sisters of Rohini
complained to their father Daksha.
Daksha tried to explain first and then threatened twice,
But Moon and Rohini were still inclined to love each
other and engrossed in doing Shiva Bhakti and Sat karma.
Furious by this Daksha gave curse to Moon that he will
lose his light and brightness.

28. Somnath Mahadev and the sacred soil
where from Bhagvan Shri Krishna took his
last journey to his neejdham.
The temple is built at the shore of the
Arabian ocean on the western corner of
Indian subcontinent.
This pilgrimage is one of the oldest and
finds its reference in the ancient texts
like SkandPuran, Screamed Bhagvan,
Shivpuran etc.

Located 37 kames from Somnath, this beach was
once home to the royal palace of the Nawab of
Junagadh.
Today it remains in a ruined state. The beach is
unsafe for swimming, but it is relatively clean,
ideal for relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze.
It does not offer any accommodation facilities but
serves as an ideal excursion from Somnath.
Coward Beach is one of the most popular
expeditions from Junagadh. It is one of the main
attractions of this place it has spectacular view of
the rocky shores. The tourists can enjoy a ride on
country boats as well.

Somnath Beach is well connected by
an efficient transport network.
The port town of Veraval serves as a
gateway to Somnath beach. Somnath
Beach is situated 6Km to the east of
Veraval.
Town is well connected by air, road

The nearest airport is at Keeshod. It
is located 47 Km away and is connects
to Mumbai.

Uparkot Fort has an impressive entrance that leads to the ruins of
the fort. The fort possesses a 300 feet deep moat which surrounds
the fort to provide protection.
In some places, the fortifications of Uparkot Fort rise up to 20
meters. The entrance of Uparkot Fort leads to several
archaeological sites, including Babupyana Caves, Naugham Kuva,
Jama Masjid, Buddhist Caves and Adi-Kadi Vav.

38. Adi-Kadi Vav, Uparkot
Adi-Kadi Vav built in the 15th century is
carved entirely out of hard rock.
A narrow flight of 120 stairs cuts down
through the stone to meet the well shaft deep
in the stone.
Two different legends claim to explain the
name of the well.

39. Ashok Shilalekh
History lovers can visit the Ashok Shilalekh or the rock
edicts of Emperor Ashoka.
One particular rock edict of Ashoka can be found in an
area between Junagadh and Girnar Hill.
On walking 3 km from Girnar Hill or 2 km eastward from
Junagadh, this rock with inscriptions that date back to 250
BC can be seen.

40. Bahauddin College
Bahauddin Government Science College,
Junagadh is the oldest college of the
science in the entire Saurashtra - Sorath
region of the Gujarat State.

41. It was established in 1902 by visionary
Vazir of Sorath state, Shri Bahauddin.
Later, on June 01, 1983 the 'Bahauddin
College' (composite) was bifurcated into
'Bahauddin Arts College' and
'Bahauddin Science College' by the
Government of Gujarat state and was
put under the commissionerate of
Higher Education.
Initially it was affiliated to Bombay
University, Bombay and presently it is
affiliated to the Saurashtra University,
Rajkot.
The college is located in urban setting
covering an area of 1.5 acres.
It is a co-educational institution.

42. The main objective of the institute was
to cater the needs of the higher
education of the people of the area that
would have strong vocational value and
job potentials.
The college was recognized by the UGC
under 2(f) on 18-02-1992 and 12(B) on
18-06-1997.
It has 40 permanent teaching staff, 27
administrative staff and 02 technical
staff members.
The college currently runs five B.Sc
courses - Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Botany and Zoology.
It also runs two M.Sc. courses - Botany
and Zoology.

43. The feeder zone of the college is
Junagadh and its surrounding areas.
The support services includes Central
Library, Boys Hostel, Sports fields, NCC,
NSS, laboratories etc.

44. Bhalka Tirtha
The Bhalka Tirtha his divined leela of Bhagvan
Shree Krishna is immortalized by a beautiful
temple and an ancient pippal tree. Bhagvan
Shree Krishna then walked a small distance and
arrived at the holy banks of river Hiran from
where he took his last journey to his Neejdham.

45. Damodar Kund
This is the main place where the two festivals are
celebrated every year.
In the month of October-November during the
period of five days concluding on the full-moon
day of Kartik Month “Parikrama” is held after
hoisting of Dhaka on this temple.

46. The Parikrama or circular travel goes on for five
days, covering a distance of about 40 Kms around
the Girnar Mountain.
It has got very much importance and is compared
to the Lili Parikrama of Govardhan mountain in
Vraj.

47. Uperkot
The middle of the town of Junagadh, there is the
ancient Upper Fort or UPERKOT on the plateau,
which is believed to have been built around 312 BC
by Chandragupta Maury.
This fort has a long history that includes 16
attempts to besiege this fort over a period of
800years.
Construction remained in oblivion for 300 years
and was rediscovered during 976 AD.
Tample of Girnar

48. Girnar (is a sacred hill both to the Hindus and
Janis. The Janis calls it Neminath.
According to traditional history, Siddhas have
used it as a retreat to undertake tapasya since
ancient times.
The 3660 feet hill is connected with Lord
Krishna. When Kalayavan, apparently a warrior
of foreign origin, was chasing him, the Lord got
the better of the powerful adversary in a curious
way.
Raja Muchkund was sleeping in one of the
caves of Raivatachal mountain (the ancient
name for Girnar) He was taking rest after
fighting on behalf of the gods.
After his exertions Muchkund had only one
desire rest and repose.
He got a boon that whoever disturbed his sleep
would be reduced to ashes when he opened his
eyes.
This boon Krishna knew. What better way to get
rid of Kalyavan. So he pretended as if he was

49. running away from Kalyavan and led him to the
Girnar temple
Krishna covered Muchkund with his upper cloth.
Kalyavan after the long chase mistook the sleeping figure for
Krishna ahim up and was reduced to ashes.
Girnar was known by different names at different periods-
Ujjayant, Manipur, Chandraketupur, Rivet Nagar, Puratanpur,
Girivar and Girnar.

50. The pilgrims have to climb 9999 steps to reach the top. There are
five important Jain temples, besides several Hindu shrines.
Darbar Hall museums
The Darbar Hall Museum is located in the center of
Junagadh city.
It was a palace of the Nawab of Junagadh which was
later converted into a museum.

51. It is situated in the old Palace of Nawab (Rang
Mahel) near Diwan Chowk.
It has on display historical artifacts palanquins,
arms gallery, picture gallery, textile gallery and the
Kacheri.
Ayurvedic Museum
Ayurvedic Museum is located at the Ayurvedic
College at Sardarbag in the western part of town.

Darbar-Hall-Museum
Darbar Hall Museum is a major attraction in
Junagadh. The Durbar Hall originally
belonged to the Nawab of Junagadh.
Historical art effacts of that time can be seen
in this hall that is segmented into sections

53. like palanquins, arms gallery, picture gallery,
textile gallery and the Kacheri.
Visitors can also see various thrones,
weapons, howdahs, costumes, armours,
tapestries and chandeliers, silver articles,
gowns, cushions and carpets and several
other things.
Museum in Sakkar Baug
The Sindhu Civilization remains which are found in
Harappa and Moen-jo-dero are also found near
Junagadh in the village called Intala.
People call it Intala because a large quantity of bricks
(Int) was found from the underground there.

54. Many remains collected therefrom have been preserved
at the museum situated at Sakkar Baug.
The Science Museum
The Science Museum at Junagadh is the first
and sole science museum privately owned in
Gujarat.

55. There are over 60 science projects in this
museum, which are related to science facts and
can be managed by visitors.
There is also a small aquarium and an open-air
garden restaurant which serves Punjabi and South
Indian dishes in the evening.

56. Somnath tample
The Someshwar Mahadev temple stands tall
among the temples of India.
The construction of the present temple in Junagadh
district began in 1950.
It is the seventh temple built to commemorate the
glory of Lord Somnath who was known as
BhAiraveshwar in the Sa (ya Yug, Shravanikeshwar
in Treta Yug and Shrigaleshwar in DwaparYug.
According to legend, Soma, the moon God built the
temple in gold, Ravan in silver, Krishna in wood and
king Bhimdev of Anhilwad in stone. Soma
constructed the temple as a gesture after Lord Shiva
cured him of his illness
. This illness was caused by his father-in-law Daksha
Prajapati's curse.

57. Ambaji Temple Girnar
The famous temple of Goddess Ambaji. It is believed that this temple was
built during the Gupta era.
5000 step Amba Mata Mandir which is located in Junagadh in Gujarat is one
of the very ancient temples of India.
It is situated at the top of the Girnar Mountain.

Bhavnath Mahadev temple

60. The Bhavnath Mahadev temple is a shrine ensconced
in myths and legends of the Puranic era.
The Shiva linga here is said to have emerged of its own
divine intention.
Reportedly, when Shiva and Parvati were traveling
over the Girnar Hills their divine garment fell over the
present Mrigi Kund, making this place an auspicious
site for Shiva worshippers.
The Bhavnath Mahadev Temple is located in the
village.
Other attractions include Damodar Kund, Mrugi
Kund, and Sudarshan Talav.
There are two main annual festivals: Maha Shivaratri
and Girnar Lili Parikrama.

61. Bordevi Temple
Bordevi Temple about 8 km away from Bhavnath.
It is a temple of goddess situated in deep forest on the

62. Kankai Mata Temple
In the heart of the jungle, 50 km from Sasan Gir, there is a shrine to
Kankai Mata, the benefactor of the shepherds of Gir forest.
Kinaki is a supremely wild place where you can hear lions roar at
night and animals gathering at the nearby lake.
There is a bus from Junagadh every morning that leaves at 8am
stays one hour at the temple and departs on the return journey at
9:45am.
But to really experience the place go with private transport and stay
at night.

63. New Swaminarayan Temple
This is the latest temple added in the temple
series of Junagadh and one of the marvelous temples built
by His Holiness Shri Pramukh Swami Maharaja of B.A.P.S.
(Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha).
The temple is spread in a large enclave of garden called
Akshar Wadi, situated near Motibaug botanical garden, on
the road to Somnath.

Nagbaima in moniya
The story of Veer Ladhva Kuchhadia begins when he was coming back from
seeing family and friends in the village of Dangavar (near Jamnagar). Coming
back, he stopped in the Padaar of Kaatvanu, just beside the Deravaav.
Stopping at the Vav (well) Ladhva’s horse became thirsty.
Shortly after, a Charan Aai came and stopped to fill some water. Ladhva asked
Jasal Aai, if she could fill two water containers for Ladhva’s horse.

68. Replying that she would fill four containers instead of two, she gave him the water.
Regarding her like a sister, Ladhva gave her some money and began to get on his
horse.
Jasal Aai told Ladhva that now they regarded each other as brother and sister, he
must go round to Jasal Aar’s house and have dinner.

Shri Dattatreya is a very ancient incarnation, highly
venerated through the ages. Dattatreya – a
Universal Guru manifested in the recess of time of
‘Kaliyug’, when humanity had gone far from its pristine
state and steeped into threshold of a time when all
kinds of vices had already taken root, and the pious
souls made fervent appealed for the salvage of the
mankind surging forward in manifold way.

Tulsishyam is located on the border of Amreli district and
Junagadh district, in the Gir forest national park in Gujarat.

71. It is 45 km from Dhari (Dist-Amreli) and 35 km from Una (Dist-
Junagadh). It is connected to both cities.
There is an ancient temple of Lord Vishnu-Lord Shyam. Legend
says that Lord Krishna eliminated the demon called Tul and so
the place is associated with his name along with that of Krishna as
Shyam and is thus called Tulsishyam.
The idol of Lord Tulsishyam is said to be 3000 years old. It is
made up of black stone. There is a hot sulphur sprint near the
temple that is believed to have curative powers.

Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary
The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary also known as
Sasan-Gir, is a forest and wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, India.
Established in 1965, the park is located about 65 km to the south-east
of Junagadh.
It is the sole home of the pure Asiatic Lions and is considered to be
one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its
supported species.

Interpretation Zone has been created within the Gir National

The Pania Wildlife Sanctuary
The Pania Wildlife Sanctuary Precipitous, undulating
landscape carpeted with wild grass and vegetation in-houses
the Pania Wildlife Sanctuary.
The ecological refuge also known by the name of Chanchai-
Pania has been home to varied species of endangered and
rare animals and was declared a Sanctuary in 1989.

79. The 39.63 square kilometers sanctuary is an extended stretch
of the Gir Sanctuary and the majestic lions and leopards
frequently roam around this area.
The Pania Wildlife refuge is differentiated from Gir to
emphasize preservation of the Chinkaras and antelopes who
wander around freely in the grassy region.
Patches of grassy land amidst the hilly arid areas render the
area suitably for the elegant and graceful Chinkara or Indian

Willingdon Dam

85. The dam is built on the river Kalwa at the foot of the hill
from where it originates.
It was built as a reservoir for drinking water for the people
of Junagadh.
It was named after Lord Willingdon, the then Governor of
India.
Near the dam, the steps go up to 2,779 feet (847 m) high to
the famous shrine of Jamiyalshah Datar, where both Hindu
and Muslim devotees share their faith.
