Guidance on completing this form
It is recommended that you take time to read the document, âAssessment Guidance â Levels 3 and 4â prior to completing this form.
When developing ideas for the project, it is essential to have a copy of the Level 3 (Officer Role) apprenticeship standard available so you can ensure coverage of the knowledge, skills and behaviours areas within the standard, and consider their applicability to the apprentice and their employer.
It is expected that projects will differ according to the particular circumstances of the individual apprentice and employer â this means that you will normally need to submit separate project proposals for every apprentice. However, there may be cases where an approved project brief can be re-used providing there have been no changes to the employer requirements / job role, purpose and objectives of the project, and the areas covered remain the same. If you want to make any changes to an approved project, you must complete a change form and send it to CIH for approval. It is also expected that you will keep the brief under regular review in line with any changes relating to the apprenticeâs job role / employer.
Make sure you allow enough time for the project brief to be approved prior to starting on the project. Our advice is that you apply for approval no later than 6 months into the apprenticeship programme.
Feedback will normally be provided within 10 days of submission.
If the project brief is not approved, you will be provided with feedback on the reasons for this. You will then be invited to submit a revised brief to CIH, using a resubmission form.

Apprentices must not start on the project until the brief has been formally approved by CIH as the apprenticeship assessment organisation.

not the company I desired to go, but also the location was very inconvenientfor me. In addition,I
did not have any prior knowledge about the marinebusiness.
īŦ However, with the support and encouragement from managers and colleagues,I started to love
about my position.I was getting a lot of interests about the marine business and our tug fleets. I
was glad to join a harbour tour to witness tug operations on the second day and itwas a fabulous
day for me. I asked and learnta lotabout HK harbour business and also thehistory and particulars
of our tugs. I discussed with our frontlinetug crew and operation controllers;I quickly picked up my
job with their patient and friendly support, and finally I developed the digital ship-shore
communication system and completed other assignments.
īŦ In these 7 weeks, my colleagues and supervisor told me I was fully satisfied to work here in future
and I took it as a compliment. I was very happy to work in HUD and I had a very meaningful summer
vacation.

It was a challengefor me to design the user interfaceof the digital communication systembecauseit must
be user friendly to both tug crew and operation controllers.I spenta lotof time to collecttheir expectations
and try to prevent erroneous result. I have no previous experience in this field, but I was very lucky that one
of our IT staff sent me a website for reference and I was ableto finish this task successfully.

be the users of the new system as well as the external serviceproviders for cost estimation. As a result,he
completed a comprehensive report about the communication system development before his departure.

PART III â Swire Values:
Pleasereview the internâs performance againsteach Swire Value.
1. Integrity â always takes the honest and ethical path; honours commitments
Comment by intern:
Honesty and ethics are the core values I behold. I agree with and followthe Companyâs code of conduct. I make
commitments atwork and I tried my utmost to honour them through honest and hard work, e.g. my work goals are
achieved before the deadlineset by my supervisor.
Comment by supervisor:
Mr. Lau has always been honest and ethical duringhis internship period. Hecommitted himself to accomplish thework
goals. After several weeks of working, he has established familiarity with our Tug Operations staff and ship crew. He was
asked to participatein conductingcondition survey of our tugs, he could honestly point out the defects and deficiencies
done by the crew in his report.
2. Humility â respects and learns from others; listens to others and seeks to understand
Comment by intern:
I have no background in ships and engineeringfield, therefore I spent a lot of time to work with tug crew. I have always
listened to and learned from them as well as my officecolleagues and my supervisor, who are more experienced than me
in the tug business. I found tug crew was a hard job because it required long hour for stayingonboard and good physical
fitness, particularly during summer time. After this internship experience, I believe a good leader must startfrom bottom.
They need to experience frontlineworkerâs job and difficulties instead of sittingin the office. As such, the leader will havea
better knowledge for setting a better policy for the staff and crew.
Comment by supervisor:
Mr. Lau recognised he has no background and limited knowledge in the maritime field. He always has thewillingness to
learn from us. He is a cheerful and conscientious worker.
3. Endeavour â relishes challenges and has resilience to deliver results; responsible and hardworking
Comment by intern:
I had no prior knowledge aboutthis industry and I spent a lot of time to read the company website, searched up the
background history of local maritimeconstruction projects for writingan articlefor presentation to the management. For
designingthe digital textcommunication system, I sought the necessary information through asking a lotof questions to
many people, includingOperationsDepartment staff, ship crew and external IT professionals and serviceprovider.
Comment by supervisor:
Mr. Lau possesses greatdetermination. He strived for excellenceand aimed atdeliveringresults. One of his tasks was
developing a ship-shoredigital text communication system and reporting on its suitability and budget to us. He managed
to develop the user system softwareâs user interface, choosethe appropriatehardwareand preparinga budget report for
establishingand continual runningof this system.

4. Continuity â has a long-term view; strives for sustainable results; engenders loyalty in customers and in staff
Comment by intern:
I learned the Hong Kong harbour towage business and the market competition with another two harbour towage
operators in my internship period. I assisted to develop the tug operationâs key performance indicators for ensuring
we will provideexcellentserviceat all timeand to maintain our dominance in the local market.
In addition I spent my lunch time with senior manager to discuss aboutthe political, economic, social affairs.I was very
happy that every casual conversation haswidened my horizons.I was ableto think further in different perspective.
I understand the nearby harbours in PRC are rapidly expandingand we need to maintain our market share. Therefore
we have created a Business Development Department and try to expand our quality serviceto customers in local and
overseas.
Comment by supervisor:
Being a business administration final year student, Mr. Lau was awareof HKSTâs situation and understood of
importance of delivering high quality serviceand operational efficiency for business success. He had suggested 4 KPIs
for measuringour tug fleet operation efficiency which arevery relevantfor our needs and for demonstration to our
clients.
5. Excellence â dedicated to maintaining the highest standards; does work in the best possible way
Comment by intern:
I attempted to complete the work goals usingmy best effort. Duringmy internship I work in the Tug Operations
Department for checkingthe towage reports submitted from tug crew againstour computer record. I understood that
if I make any error that would causeserious problem, therefore I have always reviewed my works twice before
submittingthem to my supervisor. If any mistakes/error is found after submission,I would make amendment as the
soonest.
I also told to create graphical presentation aboutthe hourly tug deployment and shortage of tugs in peak hours. This
is a new attempt and I tried my best to make it have a professional looking and with all relevantinformation.
Comment by supervisor:
In overall,Mr. Lauâs works were delivered in high standard and accuracy. Hefocused about his work outcome after
submission and asked our feedback for improvement. The graphical presentation of tug deployment is a new attempt
and his firstsubmission could fulfill our requirements.

PART IV â Overall Comments:
Overall Comments from Intern:
This was one of the best decisions I made in my life journey â joining the internship program in Swire Group. I was very
happy in this 7 weeks not only I have met so many other bright and young talented interns, but also learnt so much within
this period. I am sure such kinds of takeaways are useful wherever you go.
It was a memorable summer and internship experience because I had a chance to try everyroles and whatâs the feeling to
become a manager. I need to take imitative, step out my comfort zone, teamwork and also joining the real operation. This
was my first internship, I felt like I finally had a chance to show my talent and learning about whom I am.
It was a very fun time to spend time with my fellow colleagues and interns. It created a strong chemistry either at work or
outside of work, so many joyful memoriesand long-lasting friendships in these 7 weeks. Let me tell you a secret, I actually
do want to cry in my last day of work, because I really love my company and everyone that I met.
Overall feedback/supporting comments from direct Supervisor
Mr. Lau is still relatively young and inexperienced and at first appears to be rather diffident. However, he has become more
confident as he learned our ways in managing tug operations, and has demonstrated a keen mind and a ready grasp of new
information. He is not afraid to ask questions, which are normally quite perceptive, and several of our managers have
commented on how quickly he gets to the core of any particular problem. His computing skills have been of benefit, and we
are pleased with the contribution he has made duringhis seven weeks with us.
As will be obvious from the foregoing, Mr. Lau has had a varied range of tasks to cope with and we hope he has found them
both interesting and useful. He came to us at a very busy time, and his assistance was of great benefit to our company. We
have certainly been very happy with his performance, and have found him to be hard working and quick to grasp new ideas.
His timekeeping is excellent, he is a diligent and enthusiastic member of our team, and he has the ability to interact well with
staff and managers at all levels.
Once again, Mr. Lau shows great promise. We wish this summer internship not only gained him working experience in the
maritime field but also provided him with an insight of the core values of the Swire Group. Indeed, if he continues to progr ess,
he would certainly become an assetto any company which employs him.
