J.S. Bach was a devout Lutheran who believed music should bring glory to God. He was born in 1685 in what is now Germany and lost both parents by 1695. As a musician in the church, Bach sought to fuse faith with music and convey biblical truths to congregations. He composed pieces like his Mass in B Minor that set scripture to music to reveal God's presence and allow for intimate conversations with God. Bach believed his role was to create music that would honor God and bring permissible delight to the soul.
