4. Who Was J.S. Bach? Everybody has heard of the composer named Bach. His contributions to the musical understanding of our time are vast. This presentation will discuss his childhood, adult life and family, his religious influences, musical compositions and his contributions to music. Quit

5. Childhood He was born on May 21, 1685 in Eisenach Germany. Bach was born into a family of musicians in central Germany. His father taught him to play the harpsichord and violin. Bach had four other brothers who were also great musicians. Quit

6. Family Life Bach was a devoted husband and father. He married his Maria Barbara in 1707, and they had seven children together. After Maria Barbara Bach died, he married Anna Magdalena and had thirteen more children. Quit

7. Professional Life He worked at many different churches as a composer and musical director. Bach’s final and most important position was the cantor of St. Thomas’s Church in Leipzig. Quit

8. The Religious Man Bach was a German Lutheran. He possessed a deep spiritual devotion. Much of his music was influenced by his Christian faith. A majority of his music was written for the church. Quit

9. Musical Compositions Bach wrote an estimated 280 sacred cantatas and 30 secular cantatas. Composed seven motets, four of them for double chorus. He also wrote a great deal of chamber music, but many of these works are now lost. His orchestral music includes the “Brandenburg Concertos”, and many concerto grossi. Bach may be most famous for his keyboard music such as his fugues, two and three part inventions, and his famous book the Well-Tempered Clavier . Quit

10. Death He died on July 28, 1750 in Leizpig Germany. He suffered from a stroke and severe fever. He was 65 years old. Bach was buried in St. John’s cemetery in Leizpig. Quit

11. Contributions He was the father of the Baroque musical era. Almost all music today can be traced back to Bach’s rhythmic and melodic ideas. Bach’s surviving sons were all successful composers in their own right, most famously C.P.E. Bach (pictured below) and J.S. Bach. Quit
