One of the most over-used terms in technology today, the “Cloud” is being used to describe pretty much any service that works over the Internet. But cloud computing has some specific advantages and some specific concerns. There are also three main areas where cloud computing is making a lot of business sense: in running business applications, in provide storage services, and in providing an alternative to computer servers.
In this presentation, I will better define what the cloud is and isn’t and then explore the areas where cloud services are providing value. I also give you tips on evaluating future cloud service providers so that you can continue to understand this new computing paradigm.
What Do you Need to Know to make IT-as-a-Service a Reality?Gravitant, Inc.
Cloud is on everyone’s mind, in fact in a recent IDC survey over 70% of IT Executives indicated IT-as-a-Service is key to enterprise success and in a recent Cisco and Intel survey, 76% of respondents see themselves becoming an internal broker. These two trends represent a shift in the approach to IT services, one that focuses on business operations as much, if not more, than traditional IT operations.
Join Gravitant and Leverhawk as we share our customers’ early learnings and strategic considerations in making the transition to ITaaS and key takeaways for what you need to know to do IT-as-a-Service right in your organization.
Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale, similar to a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network.[1] At the foundation of cloud computing is the broader concept of converged infrastructure and shared services.
Cloud computing, or in simpler shorthand just "the cloud", also focuses on maximizing the effectiveness of the shared resources. Cloud resources are usually not only shared by multiple users but are also dynamically reallocated per demand. This can work for allocating resources to users. For example, a cloud computer facility that serves European users during European business hours with a specific application (e.g., email) may reallocate the same resources to serve North American users during North America's business hours with a different application (e.g., a web server). This approach should maximize the use of computing power thus reducing environmental damage as well since less power, air conditioning, rackspace, etc. are required for a variety of functions. With cloud computing, multiple users can access a single server to retrieve and update their data without purchasing licenses for different applications.

Building a Modern Analytic Database with Cloudera 5.8Cloudera, Inc.
Analytic workloads and the ability to determine “what happened” are some of the most common use cases across enterprises today - helping you understand and adapt based on changing trends. However, for most businesses today, they are only able to see a piece of the story. Analytics are limited by the amount of data able to be stored and ultimately accessed, it’s time-intensive to bring in new datasets or fit unstructured data into rigid schemas, and user access is constrained to a select few who must already know the questions they’re trying to answer.
It’s no surprise that big data is disrupting this modus operandi for analytics. A modern, Hadoop-based platform is designed to help businesses break free of these analytic limitations, providing a new kind of adaptive, high-performance analytic database. The recent release of Cloudera 5.8 continues to advance Cloudera Enterprise as the foundation for these analytic workloads.
Join Justin Erickson, Senior Director of Product Management at Cloudera, and Andy Frey, Chief Technology Officer at Marketing Associates, as they discuss:

Getting Into the Business Intelligence Game: Migrating OBIA to the CloudDatavail
This presentation discusses best practice architecture for migrating the Oracle BI Applications to the cloud. It focuses on the Oracle cloud platform and database services, with a nod to infrastructure services, to lay out the idea of the hybrid cloud, and variations of the new age cloud BI/DW architecture for your analytics environment to succeed while operating at the same reliability or better all the while benefiting from what the cloud offers best.
"Configure once, deploy anywhere" is one of the most sought-after enterprise operations requirements. Large-scale IT shops want to keep the flexibility of using on-premises and cloud environments simultaneously while maintaining the monolithic custom, complex deployment workflows and operations. This session brings together several hybrid enterprise requirements and compares orchestration and deployment models in depth without a vendor pitch or a bias. This session outlines several key factors to consider from the point of view of a large-scale real IT shop executive. Since each IT shop is unique, this session compares strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and the risks of each model and then helps participants create new hybrid orchestration and deployment options for the hybrid enterprise environments.

• Provide the case studies of three companies, what issues they were solving for, what technologies they implemented and why, and how they benefited from their new solutions.
• Learn what to look for one considering a partner and trusted advisor to assist with an analytics cloud migration.
Accelerate SQL Server Migration to the AWS Cloud Datavail
In today’s marketplace, moving to the public Cloud is a familiar and consistent trend within the SQL Server community.
But which cloud provider do you choose? After all there are different AWS instances each with their own distinctive features. Migrations to the cloud are only going to gain greater momentum as organizations grapple with their on-premises alternatives.
Recent cloud breaches may have some organizations hesitant to take the leap and move to the cloud, however market-leading cloud providers are making every attempt in adhering to compliance guidelines while boosting their security framework and reliability offerings. They are also becoming more competitive by managing their cost more effectively.
For both homogeneous and heterogeneous migrations, planning plays a critical role in moving to the cloud. Preparing a checklist and asking the right questions to stakeholders lays the groundwork in this planning. There are different methods to migrate databases from on-premises to the AWS cloud.

When you tune queries in Azure SQL Database, you may benefit from reducing resource demands as your application might run at a lower compute size and then eventually you can reduce cost.
In any given SQL Server instance, there are likely 8 to 10 queries or stored procedures that are responsible for 80 to 90 percent of the server load. If you can identify these problem queries and tune them, you can make a significant impact on the overall performance of your database. This presentation will explain some simple techniques of tuning the queries and will demonstrate before and after performance differences.

Is "Free" Good Enough for Your MySQL Environment?Datavail
MySQL can be the perfect answer for fast-growing, highly-performant and geographically-distributed database environments, but in order to function as a business-critical system with immediate response times, the ubiquitous database server needs a little help.
That’s where Continuent and Datavail come in. Combined, these two companies, which specialize in making MySQL and other databases perform continuously, have helped hundreds of enterprise, mid-market and start-up companies alike, including many in the data-dependent SaaS, e-commerce, financial services and gaming industries.
In addition, we’ll dive into why ‘managed’ database-as-a-service solutions, may not be quite as self-managing as people would like to believe. You’ll hear several case studies on how clients are effectively utilizing Continuent Tungsten software and Datavail services to optimize their MySQL environments.
Critical Preflight Checks for Your EPM ApplicationsDatavail
The environment which houses your business critical EPM applications is complex.
Maybe as complex as the cockpit of an aircraft. Just as a pilot might not be able to build or fix everything on their plane, you might be using applications but not know how to build or fix everything that’s being used. This shouldn’t stop you from doing a pre-flight check to ensure that all your Hyperion systems are running properly and set for you and your end users.
Let’s talk about some different strategies to achieve this and give you the confidence in your systems so that you can know when things are running well—or more importantly, when they need attention before takeoff.
In this presentation, we will do assess the on-premises environment and determining what workloads and databases are ready to make the move and what can you do to improve their Azure readiness while reducing downtime during the migration. Planning and assessment plays a critical role in moving to the cloud. We would see wide range of resources and tools to get an assessment completed with ease while identifying workload dependencies with practical tips and tricks focusing on sizing and costs. And finally, we’ll assess the SQL instances and identify their readiness for Azure as well.

In this presentation, we’ll explore the Accidental DBA. Oracle DBA Team Lead and expert, Steve Thompson’s presentation from Kscope19 takes on the different ways to lead an Accidental DBA.
The presentation explores:
What is an Accidental DBA, and what scenarios create an Accidental DBA?
Why it’s important to evaluate skill gaps, risks and benefits and plan for them.
Why companies should invest in the training.
Managing an EPM platform is not for the faint of heart – and going at it without a plan can leave you frustrated, nervous, and accountable if trouble strikes. But how do you prepare?
This presentation helps you get all of your EPM planning in one place with an EPM Punch List. We’ll talk through all the areas you should be concerned about to keep your Hyperion and Oracle EPM applications running smoothly, and give you solid, actionable strategies so that you are prepared for the worst.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

FaaS – Function-as-a-Service
This is a future option
Buy only what you use
Channel by Channel, instead of cable or dish lineup
SaaS – Software-as-a-Service
Bundled functions into a service
Application that is developed/ported into a shared
infrastructure model
Data, applications are typically stored outside your
firewall
14. www.datavail.com 14
PaaS
Think of this like an SDK (Please don’t shoot me for the
over-simplification)
Develop, run, and manage applications without needing
to manage the infrastructure
Plug-and-play modules to enhance capabilities quickly
Used to enhance or extend SaaS solutions
Also sometimes used to describe on-prem applications
on IaaS
Platform-as-a-Service
15. www.datavail.com 15
DBaaS – Database-as-a-Service
Quickly stand up a database, create some tables and
upload data
IaaS – Infrastructure-as-a-Service
Think servers
Bare metal options
Pre-build OS
Get a desktop or server up and running quickly
16. www.datavail.com 16
Hosting
Putting your on-premises
server/DB/app onto someone
else's hardware
Could be a virtual or physical
move
Could be a rack, or a VM
Third party that you contract to manage
your server, DB, application, services
etc.
Some of these work together, others

Which to use?
When the off-the-shelf product will meet your needs
Commodity services
Limited or no customizations
Extensions ok (PaaS)
Operating budget is available
CapEx is not available
Limited interfaces, self-contained business processes
SaaS
18. www.datavail.com 18
Can be in your cloud, or a provider
Quick deployments
Avoids expensive or complex architecture
Convention tools may be limited
Which to use?
PaaS
19. www.datavail.com 19
Major players are Oracle, Amazon, Google, Microsoft
Provides a server (may contain OS, web server etc)
Workloads are quite variable
• High usage for short periods of time
• Can be turned off at night, weekends, outside peak
periods
Need quick provisioning
User self service
Which to use?
IaaS
20. www.datavail.com 20
Decision Matrix SaaS
Can business processes be changed to conform
to the application?
Standard processes across the globe
Limited interfaces/data loads
Reporting needs are minimal
Do you own your data? Can you locally store it
later?
21. www.datavail.com 21
Decision Matrix IaaS
A set of questions to help understand the workload
being considered
Not all workloads are suitable for the cloud
Best to derive a formula to determine suitability
Based on workload, costs, availability, need to flex
CPU, memory, storage
22. www.datavail.com 22
Decision Matrix Hosting
Can the service be provided outside of your data
center?
Allow providers to clone/backup/test DR
Many will include BIOS, OS, Java patching
Ability to grow and shrink CPU, memory, storage
needs
Data location/data privacy concerns
23. www.datavail.com 23
Decision Matrix AMS
Many times hosting/AMS can be combined for
cost savings
May include application/database level patching
Concerns about who has access to the data
Cloning of complex applications like EBS
Provide Level 1 and Level 2 support
More team focused on enhancement backlog
24. www.datavail.com 24
Workloads are high and consistent
Considerable customization or
extensions are needed
Legal/compliance reasons around
requiring data stored on site
You have the staff and expertise to
support it
Existing software licenses are already
paid for
Workload Considerations
May be best to wait for next upgrade
cycle
Business processes are not
standardized
Capital vs Operating expense
Cloud is not always the cheapest
Those were ‘Cloud’ options. On-premises is better when:
25. www.datavail.com 25
Extras to
consider
Backups
Who is responsible for the backups
BR/DR – how are your backups tested
Storage and retrieval needs
High Availability – Can you staff and afford clusters, RAC,
etc?
Cloning – creating dev/test environments
Encryption – many providers include encryption in their
offerings
Testing – do you have a testing solution or strategy?
26. www.datavail.com 26
Compliance
Issues
Multi-tenant Concerns
• Are you sharing hardware, data bases?
Data Privacy – is the data PII, PCI, HIPAA?
Data Location
• Moving to a data center down the street
• May not be that simple for compliance
• Contracts are often written with language:
• Internal data stores
• Specific addresses
• “Owned” by company
27. www.datavail.com 27
What have
we seen…
One size does not fit all
Workloads were a small consideration
Application affinity is a larger consideration
Product maturity was a large driver
Willingness of the business to change processes
to comply
Misunderstanding of what cloud providers actually
provide
Management tools across solutions are lacking
28. www.datavail.com 28
If you are using HR Modules
HR/HCM
Many complex integrations, best of breed
Oracle HCM product very mature
• Exception payroll – outsource that
Moving module by module
• Time and labor
• Recruitment
• Compensation
• Benefit tracking
Working to establish core HR
SaaS is commonly the direction
29. www.datavail.com 29
If you are using Finance
Accounting (AR/AP/GL) Planning
and Budgeting
Cloud offerings in subledger and project
accounting are not there yet
EPM products have matured a lot in the past
year
Many integrations - reporting needs are
huge
Steady workloads
Iaas/Hosting/AMS is commonly the direction
30. www.datavail.com 30
If you are using
Manufacturing
Manufacturing/Logistics
If core to your business
• Customizations are your differentiator
• Iaas/Hosting/AMS is the direction
If not core to your business
• Look for operational cost savings
• Leverage new features/capabilities as

Quick overview of expectations of this presentations. We are not going to provide a specific plan for your project, each project is different. We cannot cover all areas of reporting hierarchies, but I wanted to share a few key areas that tend not to get as much focus as they should, and results in issues down the road.
This experience spans many different “Major” applications listed here from my own personal experiences as a user, developer, DBA, BA, PM, and executive sponsor over the past 20 years.
As mentioned, we are not endorsing this as a blueprint for success, but rather suggestions on key activities you need to keep focus on
