You made the right choice when you
selected Essbase
• Used by more than 10,000 corporations, including many Fortune 100
and Fortune 500 companies
• Been in use for over 25 years
• Key strategic product for Oracle
• Is the underlying technology behind many other Oracle products
• It's fast, it's shared, it's secure, it's scalable
Groundbreaking
beginnings as an
"extended
spreadsheet
database" product
from Arbor Software
Embodied the
principles of "online
analytical processing"
(OLAP), set out the
father of relational
databases - E.F. Codd
A Brief History of Essbase
Arbor merged
with Hyperion
Software
Saw the
introduction of
ASO
technology in
Version 7
IBM started
shipping Essbase
as "DB2 OLAP
Server" with
widespread
release until 2005
Named one of the 10
most influential
technology innovations
by Information Age
magazine
Acquisition of
Hyperion by
Oracle
Corporation -
Oracle + Hyperion
= Gorilla
The product is
officially
named "Oracle
Essbase“
1993 1998 2005 20051992 1998 2007 2009
Essbase benefits and features
• It's more than just Excel on Steroids
• Rapid batch loads and fast calculation times
• Sub-second retrievals of data
• Analysis at the speed of thought

KScope19 Revelations 12:19
• Uh oh. Oracle just turned the world of analytics upside down -- again.
• What does it all mean?
• Essbase will not be a part of Oracle Analytics going forward
• Essbase is a stand-alone database again
• Next Essbase version will be Essbase 19c
• One product line with two flavors
• Essbase 19c Cloud (expected release by end of 2019)
• Essbase 19c On-Prem (planned release 2020)
• Pricing is expected to go down -- still can use universal credits
What are the feature benefits of Essbase
19c Cloud (over today's Essbase On-Prem)?
• Essbase was rewritten for the cloud
• Significant performance improvements
• Enhanced hybrid engine
• Sandboxing
• Scenario Management
• Build on-demand Essbase cubes
• Design by example Essbase applications -- ready-to-use-business models from
Excel to Essbase Cloud in under a minute.
What are the feature benefits of Essbase
19c Cloud (over today's Essbase On-Prem)?
• Deeper feature integration with Smart View
• Cube Designer - Table to cube in Cube Designer
• Support for Google Sheets
• Support for the Web UI = Smart View for the Mac!
• Use any data and any cloud application
• Expanded toolbox for working with applications
• Idle cube detection = Idle time backups!
• Mirroring
• Application-level Essbase configuration
Deprecated Features not supported in
Essbase 19c
• EAS -- use the new Jet UI instead and/or DBX workbooks
• Essbase Studio -- use the new Jet UI
• Non-Unicode applications
• Currency conversion
• Varying attributes
Top 9 Reasons to move Essbase to the Cloud
You need to upgrade
anyway
You want to focus on
what you do best
The cloud is faster and
more powerful
The cloud has access
to new functionality
You want to fully
leverage Smart View
You want more
flexibility during
licensing negotiations
You need a system
that’s scalable (up and
down)
You want to add to
your existing
investments
You don’t want to
retrain your team
But what about staying on-premise?
Couldn't that also work?
• Yes!
• But weigh the Capex cost and additional IT support cost of maintaining
servers, OS patching, etc against going "serverless" with PaaS cloud
• Both Essbase 19c Cloud and On-Prem are "customer managed"
• Initially Essbase 19c On-Prem will only be available on Oracle Linux 7.x
• Supported Oracle DB (for Metadata RCU) initially to be 12.1c, 12.2c, and 18c
• Integration with directory services for security - through WebLogic or IDCS
• Support matrix expands in 2020 - Windows is likely next, since most Essbase
systems are Windows
What are all of the different versions
of Essbase now? (and you thought it was going to
be simplified)
• But I already have Essbase in the cloud with PBCS
• Yes, but even with the new EPM 11.2 release you will still only have Essbase 11.1.2.4
• My BIFS (Oracle BI Foundation Suite) has Essbase 12c - wouldn't I just use that?
• Maybe, but you only have Essbase 12.x
• And your BIFS ultimately becomes OAS - without Essbase.
• I have OAC - Essbase, won't that be upgraded?
• No. Your OAC - Essbase is now end-of-life and is frozen at Essbase 12c
• Essbase 19c is meant to be Native Essbase only
What does moving to the cloud look like?
• How and when you move "depends"
(don't you just hate that answer?)
• What path should you choose?
• When should you do it?
Case Study: Insurance Company
• Running Oracle software on-premise
• Spending more that $200k per month in
maintenance fees
• Cautious with upgrades – took lots of
justification
• Eventually, their version was substantially
out of date
• Two Options:
• Upgrade to the latest Essbase on-prem
• Migrate to the cloud
Case Study: Insurance Company
• Chosen Solution: Migrate to the cloud
• Significant expenses of on-premise
upgrade weren’t worth it
• Datavail migrated more than 2 dozen
Essbase applications
• Migration to cloud completed in
3 months
• Client determined that the migration
was quick to implement and free of an
expensive hardware investment
Essbase to Cloud: Top Tips
Conclusion
• You probably still want to use a good implementation partner
• Datavail has strong cloud implementation and on-prem migration
experience

implementation
