The document is a journal of a student's experience planning and carrying out a school festival called "Central Fest" over several months. It describes brainstorming festival ideas, deciding on a media theme, planning logistics, promoting the event, preparations on the day of the festival like training volunteers, and subsequently evaluating the festival's success.
Keeping the Conversation Alive
Lindsey Schofield,
Festival of Colour
Ever wondered how a biennial festival can maintain engagement in between festivals? It’s a bit like a long distance relationship with intense bursts of activity and then long periods of silence. Facebook is the perfect medium however to keep the conversation going and enable both sides to feel involved and connected when it sometimes feels like there’s not much to talk about.
The Festival of Colour has developed a unique way of approaching content using ‘content buckets’ to keep conversations meaningful and relevant.
In this session Festival of Colour General Manager Lindsey Schofield will show how she approached this dilemma, and why Facebook was the right medium for this in all the plethora of social media channels. She will outline what their initial goals were and how they implemented them with some step by step practical advice on how to manage Facebook content, how to navigate your way through the minefield of Facebook advertising and will share the best practice that she has developed for this biennial festival.
Never afraid to show what didn’t work as well as what has worked this will be an interesting and entertaining session ideal for anyone who faces a challenge of engaging with their audiences with a small budget, little resource and sometimes feeling like they’ve got nothing to say! Ideal for festival, production company, and venue management and marketing staff.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Festival Journal
06/09/10
This lesson we were given an introduction to festival and highlighted what we would be doing in the unit. We were also given a brief about what we will be doing this lesson. Our task was to brainstorm on what a festival is and their purposes. In order to get a better understanding on festival we went to the library and did research for our PowerPoint 6.1.
13/09/10
In this lesson we met Susan O’Shea who is involved in a festival called ‘Lady Fest’. She gave us an introduction about festivals and what the festival she is hosting about. We made mind maps in groups on what makes a good festival, discussed positive as well as negative issues along with resolutions.
15/09/10
Today we discussed our initial ideas on what our festival should be about. We decided that the theme should revolve around ‘Media’ and fundraising and how we would achieve it. As a group we discussed names for our festival but didn’t come to an overall decision. We also designed our own individual logos for the festival.
20/09/10
Today we made a start on 6.2 which is planning the festival. We had to work on resources we would need, who would be involved and any equipment we would require. We also had to think about issues such as health and safety and to ask experts for advice on improvements and things to consider when planning a festival.
27/09/10
In today’s lesson, we discussed about the name of the festival and there were few disagreements. We also talked about what to include in the festival and chose the title of the festival to be ‘Central Fest’.
29/09/10
Today, a professional photographer, Olly Harop, visited us and taught us basic photography skills. He split us up into three groups and took us around the school to practise taking professional standard photographs using professional photography equipment. Each member of out group had to rotate on roles such as stylist, reflector, photographer and model. This was quite helpful as I got to develop my photography skills for future references.
11/10/10
This lesson, we went over to the CTC site which was the venue for our festival and briefly discussed entrance issues/facilities, toilets, needs for disabled people etc. We decided that he back gate would be the entrance for the festival as is leads to the playground where the people attending can get a taster of what is indoors. Also because it is a fairly big entrance and would be simple for most people.
18/10/10
Nikki Shaill came in and gave us an introduction on what Lady Fest is about. Nikki Shaill works in the marketing side of Lady Fest and told us about the different marketing styles they have used previously and how successful it was. She also advised us on what marketing tools we should consider and ways to publicise our festival.
01/11/10
Today we drew up a checklist on what we need to do and set dates for ourselves on when to complete them to ensure we don’t fall behind. Our main focus was on poster designing, application forms for volunteer helpers, days to attend assemblies to promote the festival etc. We had to book meetings with Ben Cole for application forms and discussed the running order with the General Programming team.
03/11/10
Today during lunch time we had a one hour meeting with Ben Cole who is the school events co-ordinator and head management for central fest about producing the application forms for the volunteer helpers. During the meeting we talked about where to locate each workshop and event. We also suggested new ideas such as popcorn machine for the cinema room so people can buy their own popcorn whilst watching the movie.
04/11/10
Today we didn’t have a lesson but we went into Year 11 assembly to announce that we need volunteer helpers for the festival and handed out application forms authorized by the school head for those that wanted to volunteer.
08/11/10
Today we made promotional material such as badges to stick onto our clothes on the day of the festival so that the public recognises us and knows immediately who to go to for help.
12/11/10
Today we attended a Bonfire Night themed festival by Girl Fawkes at the South Bank Centre which is where Lady Fest 10 had a celebration on Friday 12th November 2010.
20/11/10
Today was the day of the event and everything went according to plan excepting few people being late and the weather was cold but dry so we didn’t have to worry too much. In the morning we had to give everyone a brief on their roles, responsibilities and expectations and a 'Central +'. We also planned out a rotation sheet to make it fair for all the helpers for example the person who is outside signing everyone in and out for the first half would change roles with someone else for the second half.
22/11/10
Todays lesson was to evaluate the event and discuss what went well and not so well and improvements that could be made. We also talked about how the event went in general and whether it was successful or not.
29/11/10
Today we were in the Library to complete blog work on festival.
06/12/10
We collected evaluation responses from visitors and analysed them to get an overall view of how successful and enjoyable the festival was.
10/01/11
Completing blog work and worksheets to be uploaded onto blog.
