Geneva II
The Geneva II peace conference aims to bring representatives of the Syrian government and opposition together to negotiate an end to the ongoing civil war. The talks, scheduled for January 22, 2014, follow the Geneva Communique of 2012 which called for a transitional governing body and elections. However, major obstacles to an agreement remain, including the opposition's demand that Assad step down and not participate in any transitional government, as well as the rejection of the talks by powerful rebel commanders. While world leaders see the conference as the best chance for peace, success is uncertain given the fundamental disagreements between the sides over Assad's future role and the rebels' refusal to be bound by any agreements.

Byzantium
