Dr. Susan Silver is a pathologist who completed her training at Johns Hopkins University and now has a private practice in Pittsburgh providing second opinions on pathology diagnoses. The Ride to Conquer Cancer will take place in September 2014, with proceeds going to cancer research at Johns Hopkins University. The Johns Hopkins Pathology Department is organizing a team called Team Pathology to participate, led by co-captains Allen Valentine and Suzy Nicol.

Presence United Samaritans Medical Center recently announced that it will help enroll 300,000 people from across the United States in the Cancer Prevention Study-3, a project sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The researchers involved in the study hope to gain insight into factors that prevent and/or give rise to various types of cancer. If accepted into the study, participants between 30-65 years old with no prior cancer diagnosis will have their personal information kept confidential by staff members, and the study requires no financial contribution from those enrolled.

Neoplasia can directly affect the host through local growth of the primary tumor or metastases. The primary tumor may compress or destroy adjacent structures, cause pain, vascular changes, and functional deficits depending on its location and rate of growth. It can also secrete hormones. Metastases have similar direct effects through local growth at their sites. Advanced cancer and metastases can also indirectly affect the host through paraneoplastic syndromes, cachexia, anemia, coagulation abnormalities and other clinical effects mediated by tumor-secreted factors.
Pertusis
Bordetella pertussis is an aerobic, non-spore forming, Gram negative coccobacillus (Shumilla et al., 2004). It has no known reservoir other than humans and is thought to be unable to survive in the environment for prolonged periods of time (Merkel, 1998). The Bordetella genus of the Alcaligenaceae family is comprised of seven different species, four of which cause upper respiratory tract infections in different host organisms (Babu et al., 2001). Bordetella parapertussis is the most closely related to Bordetella pertussis . It can cause a milder pertussis-like disease in humans, but Bordetella pertussis is the most serious human pathogen in this genus (Babu et al., 2001). B. pertussis invades its human host through entry into the respiratory tract where it colonizes to cause whooping cough, also known as pertussis, which was at one time a very common and potentially life threatening infection for children (Steele, 2004). Today, whooping cough still effects 20-40 million people worldwide each year and causes between 200,000-400,000 fatalities (Shumilla et al., 2004). Diagnosis and Management of Shock

Shock
Shock is a condition where the cardiovascular system fails to adequately perfuse tissues. It can be caused by an impaired pump (cardiogenic shock), reduced circulating volume (hypovolemic shock), or maldistribution of blood flow (distributive shock). The main effects are cellular hypoxia, impaired metabolism, and organ damage or failure if not treated. Compensatory mechanisms aim to increase perfusion but eventually fail, leading to irreversible cellular damage and death if shock persists.

The University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health is recruiting master's and doctoral students for a 2-3 year fellowship focused on disparities in breast cancer. Students will collaborate with faculty on disparities research, complete coursework, and participate in a community-based project. As a scholar, Ms. Venkatachalam is eligible to receive funds to implement a public health project focused on a Healthy People 2020 goal in her community.

Anal cancer
This chapter discusses the anatomy and histology of the anus. There are several ways to define the boundaries of the anal canal, including anatomically from the dentate line to the anal verge, pathologically as the area between the upper and lower borders of the anal sphincter complex, and surgically as the area between the pelvic floor and anoderm. The anal canal has both squamous and columnar epithelial cells and is innervated by sacral nerves S2-S4. Understanding the anatomy of the anus is important for appropriately staging and treating anal cancer.
