2. INTRODUCTION
 An experienced wealth manager in charge of over $1 billion in client assets,
Gary Fournier serves as a managing director at JP Morgan in Los Angeles.
Throughout his career, Gary Fournier has balanced his professional activities
with various charitable pursuits. Recently, he established the Debi & Gary
Fournier Cervical Cancer Research Fund at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive
Cancer Center (JCCC).
In a November 2017 press release, the JCCC announced that the Patient-
Centered Outcomes Research Institute has awarded a $6.6 million grant to
support a study led by UCLA researcher Dr. Roshan Bastani. The study will
combine the efforts of the JCCC, the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health,
and the Northeast Valley Health Corporation to examine ways to increase
human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among adolescents.
A sexually transmitted virus, HPV is a major cause of several cancers,
including vaginal, penile, vulvar, and oropharyngeal. The virus is also one of
the leading causes of cervical cancer, which leads to the deaths of more than
250,000 women each year.

3. HPV VACCINATION
 Although HPV-related cancers can be prevented with a vaccine,
vaccination rates among adolescents in the United States are
relatively low.
With the funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes
Research Institute, Dr. Bastani’s team will lead a five-year
research project comparing three strategies for increasing
vaccination rates. The strategies include a clinic-based
approach targeting medical professionals, policies, and
procedures in health clinics and a parent-reminder approach
that uses text messages and mailed reminders to ensure
adolescent patients receive the HPV vaccine. The study will
involve a largely Latino population receiving care at the
Northeast Valley Health Corporation in Los Angeles County.
