3. JOHN GALLIANO
John Galliano was born on November 28, 1960, in
Gibraltar.
He is a British fashion designer who served as head
designer of the French haute couture houses Givenchy
(1995-1996) and Christian Dior (1996-2011).
After graduating from Central Saint Martins, he launched
his own line.
In 2011, his career went down when he was arrested for
making Anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris bar.
4. EARLY LIFE
His Spanish mother, a teacher, dressed her son in
elaborate outfits, even when toting him along on the
simplest of errands.
Despite being teased by his sloppily dressed
schoolmates, Galliano’s mother instilled in him a bold and
creative sensibility.
6. PROFESSIONAL CAREER
His graduating collection in 1984, inspired by the French
Revolution and entitled "Les Incroyables”.
Galliano soon established his own label and enjoyed the
support of various financial backers.
His collections were both dramatic and intricate, but within
just a few years his elaborate visions were squashed by a
lack of business prowess. He went bankrupt in 1990.
7. In July 1995, he was appointed as the designer
of Givenchy by Bernard Arnault, owner of luxury goods
conglomerate LVMH, thus becoming the first British
designer to head a French haute couture house.
On 21 January 1996, Galliano presented his first couture
show at Givenchy at the Stade de France.
The collection received high praise within the fashion
media. Some of Galliano's designs for Givenchy were
licensed to Vogue Patterns.

8. DIOR
In October 1996, LVMH moved Galliano to Christian Dior,
replacing Italian designer Gianfranco Ferre.
At Dior, Galliano received critical acclaim for his Haute
Couture and ready-to-wear collections.
In 2010, Galliano identified his love of theatre
and femininity as central to his creations; he said "my role
is to seduce", and credited Standard Oil heiress Millicent
Rogers as an influence.
9. DESIGN AESTHETICS
His creativity, style, technique, craftsmanship are
beyond ambitious.
Galliano is known for his own dramatic final-bow-
costumes, finishing his shows wearing fantastical get-
ups inspired by the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte and
U.S. astronauts.

be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers would all be
fucking gassed.”

• As a result, Dior decided to suspend him immediately.
