The Johannesburg Children’s Home first opened in
1892. A committee of women established the charity
using the Fancy Fair proceeds and weekly street
collections. After the South African War in 1902, many
children returned to the city and needed help meeting
their basic needs.

3.  Today, children from 3 years old to 18 years old
receive the care they need, no matter their race.
One of the ways that the home provides for the
children’s current and future needs is by offering them
an education. Since 1892, hundreds of children have
lived at the home, moving on to join communities as
productive members of society. To do this adequately,
the home has developed 16 different schools that the
children can attend. Each of these schools was chosen
with care to guarantee that the children have access to
positive environments and learning styles.
