3. Local architecture firm Goettsch Partners
has built a tower with a wave-like glass
facade on top of Chicago's 1920s Cedar
Hotel. Goettsch Partners added the
eighteen storey tower to the existing
four-storey Cedar Hotel to create an
expanded hotel named the Viceroy
Chicago.
4. The new tower, which spans over 45,000
square metres, has a completely different
visual identity than the existing four-storey
structure. Its angular glass curtain
contrasts with the original build, which is
rectangular in form and constructed from
red brick with ornate terracotta details. The
architects preserved the original 1920s
structure, with the building's brickwork
informing the design of the modern
addition.
5. "The distinctive 'folding' geometry is inspired by the
argyle-like pattern found in the historic brick façade below,"
said a statement from Goettsch Partners.
A new rooftop terrace has been created on the former
rooftop of the brick structure. The hotel is topped with a
rooftop pool and cocktail lounge that has views across the
city skyline and the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Hospitality
design firm TAL Studio led the interior design of the hotel.
6. Along with 180 bedrooms, the hotel has a
464-square-metre meeting and event space, and a
204-square-metre ballroom. A triple-height lobby
atrium is furnished with marble floors, brass light
fixtures, and decorative pieces that reference the
French poet Marcel Proust, while an outdoor dining
area and terrace overlook the street.
7. "The display is inspired by the architectural
elements and sculptural forms of the midcentury,
and serve as a nod to Chicago’s storied
architectural history," said Goettsch Partners.
