New Year Message from the Bishop
“A Happy New Year!” “Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu!”
Congratulations! Another new year has opened up! First of all, I would like
to thank everyone for your help and support for Jodo Mission, especially I
would like to thank the people who made donations for the repair of our temple
building. The building became very beautiful and safe again.
I also would like to thank the volunteers who worked so hard last year. Be-
cause of their help, the activities such as O-Bon, Bon Dance, Mochi Making
and so on were very successful.
In my new year message last year, I told you that we lost 127 members and our membership
went down to 617. However, in this message this year, I am very glad to tell you that our mem-
bership increased to 629! It is 12 families more than the last year! It is not a big increase but
still a good news.
This year, let’s aim higher!. If you know anybody who can help us or join our membership,
such as your son, daughter, your niece or nephew, your sister of brother, or even your friends,
please let me know.
Also, if you have any idea to increase our membership, please let me know, too. We are al-
ways open to your creative ideas.
Now, the door of 2018 is open. Let’s pray for more good things to happen during this year. If
you lost your beloved ones last year, let’s pray for them to be able to live their happy and peace-
ful second lives in the Pure Land.
At the end of my message, I would like to again thank all of our members, supporters
and friends, and ask for your continuous support for Jodo Mission.
May Buddha keep on shining upon us and may you have a very Happy New Year!
In Gassho,
Bishop Yubun Narashiba

Jodo Mission of Hawaii President’s 2018 New Year Message
Dear Members,
Thank you for your support and for attending Jodo Mission of Hawaii’s
services, Bon dance, mochi-making, and other events. In the last quarter
of 2017, we have repaired and painted our temple and begun repairing
and painting our apartment building. We are happy on how beautiful it
looks!
One of my wishes for you in 2018 and for the rest of your existence is to have peace
and happiness within yourself, so that you can share your peace and happiness with
others. In our Buddhist practice, we work daily on the Noble Eightfold Path of Right
Understanding, Right Purpose, Right Speech, Right Conduct, Right Livelihood, Right
Endeavor, Right Thought, and Right Mediation. A practice that’s mentioned in
Buddhist scripture that has helped me tremendously is gratitude. Everyday, from the
moment we wake up, we can be thankful for what we have such as the cozy bed that
we just slept in; taste of hot green tea; orange glow of the morning sun; useful kitch-
enware we use to make our tasty breakfast; and a quiet self-reflection or meditation.
Start the morning with this peaceful gratitude practice, and you will power through
the day with more gratitude and push through difficult situations with a balanced
soul.
Have a great 2018!
With Warmest Aloha,
Jon Riki Karamatsu
President of Jodo Mission of Hawaii

Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai
On November 19, 2017, the Fujinkai ladies had their Appreciation Party
(dim sum & noodles) to thank volunteers who came to help at Bon Dance and
also to thank the Fujinkai ladies who helped with family service refreshments
and O-Bon Service lunch and dinners for the ministers and workers. From ad-
vertising in our Bulletin, the Fujinkai ladies were able to receive some volun-
teers to help with in sushi making, gyoza making, yaki soba making, and the
selling of all their cooking items. After the party, Sally Hayashi, president, realized she forgot
one very important person, Richard Karamatsu who worked very hard helping with the yaki
soba in the huge wok. He worked two nights and how could she forget him! Without his help,
she would have had to stir the yaki soba all night herself. THANK YOU RICHARD and hope
you come back next year at Bon Dance! Everyone who attended had a won-
derful time not only with good food but games like the memory game and jan
ken po, etc. ARIGATO to the many supporters of Honolulu Jodo Shu Fu-
jinkai!
4. UPDATE ON RENOVATIONS
This is to report on the progress of renovations to our temple. As reported in the Decem-
ber Bulletin, the renovation work continues. Most of the renovation work to the temple will
be done by the time this Bulletin reaches you. One large portion will be
done sometime early next year—the awning in the back of the temple
above the temple bell (that portion
between the two Nokotsudo or Col-
umbarium rooms). During the awn-
ing replacement period, the Noko-
tsudo rooms may be closed for your
safety. There are a lot of spalling
which need to be repaired when the
awning is taken off and before the new awning placed. Spalling is when rain water seeps into
the cement and meets the rebar or metal inside the cement and over time the metal rusts and
pops the cement and cracks appear. Please call the temple office if you have any questions.
Stairs to the Nokotsudo have been repaired. See photos below of the landing area which
was repaired, and it looks beautiful now!
The back stairway to the office also had a lot of spalling
and the railings repaired.
A horizontal
pillar had
spalling crack
which was
repaired. >>>

tive coating applied.
Thank you everyone for
your patience and cooper-
ation!

Gyoki-e (Honen Shonin’s Memorial Service)
Gyoki-e means the memorial service for Honen Shonin. Honen Shonin, who is
the founder of Jodo Shu, passed away on January 25th, 1212. He was 80 years old.
After Honen Shonin passed away, his disciples and believers started to have a
memorial service for him on the 25th of every month. The biggest ceremony was
held on 25th of January every year. This service was held not only locally in Kyoto
but it spread all over Japan. In those days, the word “Gyoki” meant the anniver-
sary of the deaths of the Emperors or their wives. The word “Gyoki” was such a
respectable word for the Emperor's family.
Three hundred years after Honen Shonin passed away, Emperor Gokashiwabaa
mandated Jodo Shu tto call the anniversary of Honen Shonin’s death “Gyoki”

“Gyoki”. Since then, people called his annual memorial service “Gyoki”. This occasion implied that
Honen Shonin was clearly accepted and revered by the Emperor and the people.
Our Gyoki-e service will be held on January 21st at 10 a.m. Please join us.
Chutoba is available for this Gyoki-e service. At this service you may also honor your deceased ances-
tors with a Chutoba prayer. See above for the Chutoba order form.
IMPORTANT: If you see anything suspicious, please go to the
temple office and tell them what strange person or things you
saw. While visiting the temple, whether it is for a service or if you are visiting the
Nokotsudo or Columbarium, etc., if you see any strange person(s), please go to the
temple office to report what or who you saw and where you saw the person or
thing. This is very important! This is for the safety of everyone. Thank you.

FAQ: How should we discard Kagami Mochi?
ANS: Because of the unique climate of Hawaii, Kagami Mochi gets moldy much faster than
in Japan. Therefore, it is recommended to take the mochi down after the first three holy days
of the New Year (i.e. on January 4th), although it is a common practice in Japan to keep them
until January 11th.
After you take them down, it is best to eat them very soon. However, in Hawaii, it is
quite possible that the Kagami Mochi is already moldy. In that case, sprinkle a dash of salt on
the Kagami Mochi to purify them just like Sumo wrestlers purify the Sumo ring with salt and
wrap them with white paper such as paper towel, and then throw them away.
Or you may soak the moldy Kagami Mochi in water so the mold will easily
rub off the mochi and can be eaten in soups, fried or can be cooked over the
hibachi.

for general cleaning of the temple, in-
