Overview of “The Employment Situation”
• The September report showed an overall
monthly gain of 142,000 jobs – below the
previous twelve-month average of
247,000 per month.
• The unemployment rate remained
stagnant at 5.1%
• Revisions to prior months:
- The July number was revised from +245,000 to
+223,000
- The August number was revised from +173,000
to +136,000
- That’s a total of 59,000 fewer jobs than was
previously reported

Employment in September
• Total nonfarm payroll employment
increased by 142,000 jobs in September,
which is below the 12-month average of
198,000
- Unemployment remained at 5.1%, the lowest
since April 2008
- The number of long-term unemployed was
little changed at 2.1 million
- Over the year, the number of long-term
unemployed has declined by 847,000
- Discouraged workers in September was
635,000 – virtually unchanged
- Average hourly payrolls down one cent, to
$25.09

State & Regional Report – August 2015
• State and Regional unemployment rates were little changed in August.
• 32 states reported an increase in employment from the prior month, while 18 states,
plus the District of Columbia reported decreases.
- Over the year, 47 states and the District of Columbia have reported increases.
• The Midwest had the lowest regional unemployment rate at 4.6% (falling from 4.8%),
and the West had the highest unemployment rate at 5.7% (unchanged from July).
• The largest month-over-month increase in percentage employed occurred in Hawaii
(+1.3 percent).
• California (+36,200), Florida (+19,600) and Ohio (+14,600) reported the most significant
over-the-month employment increases in August.
• New York and Texas (both -13,700), plus New Hampshire (-3,900) had the greatest
decrease in employment in August.
