Vienna (Modern) Attractions/ Nightlife
Unlike its German-speaking cousin, Berlin--a capital famous for its
24/7 party lifestyle--Vienna has a more timid, cleaner image.
However, Austria’s capital city has a surprisingly lively nightlife
within the city’s subcultures--here are a few of the best places to
check out for a memorable evening.
Pubs
Fischer Bräu: The first pub brewery in Vienna,
offers good pub food and seasonal special brews.
Bermuda Bräu: First floor serves typical Viennese
Food. On the ground floor the pub stays open
well past midnight. In the basement, another bar
with dance floor.
Shamrock Pub/ Flanagans: Two notable Irish
Pubs. Interior of Flanagans was dismantled in
Ireland, transported to Vienna, and reassembled
here.
Clubs
Donau Techno: Techno music and big sized visuals on the walls. The
whole room turns into a screen, when they turn on their projector and
suddenly the white walls are full of whatever image they show.
Club Flex: Live music club hosting a varied program of concerts & DJ
sets, with a huge outdoor terrace.
Grelle Forelle: Dance club & bar featuring international techno, house
& hip-hop DJs, plus a canalside terrace.
Club 4: Very popular, many different kinds of
music played. Open all night, occasional live
bands.
Transportation in Vienna
Overview: known to be cheap,
efficient, safe, fast, and clean
Vienna has many types of transportation
including:
● U-Bahn, or Subway
● S-Bahn, or Local train
● Straßenbahn, or Tram
● Bus System called Autobus
● Taxi services
Transportation - Overview
All 3 main transport systems are based
on an honor system.
No ticket check on the subway, tram, or
bus systems; sometimes there’s
undercover agents though
Subway, tram and bus are all owned by
the same company so tickets are easy.
1 ticket can usually grant access on the
train, bus, tram, and subway (from A to
B)
Transportation - Travel Pass
● They have an option for a TravelPass, in
which the basic version grants you
access to almost 60 tourist attractions,
and 24, 48, or 72 hours of travel.
● Also a basic card that only has travel and
can apply some discounts to tourist
attractions.
● They also have a weekly pass for longer
stays.
● TravelPass is recommended if you see a
few sights, pays itself back pretty quick.
Transportation: Tickets
Tickets are available through any of the
station resource desks or automated ticket
machines.
Can pay with cash, card, or coins
You validate tickets with a blue machine
that is seen on the right.
Transportation - Uber
Uber was in Vienna until April of 2018 when
they got sued by a local taxi company called
Taxi 40100 for undermining them.
Instructed harsh rules such as having a
central location for cars to return to and
having to book with Uber itself and not a
driver, which Uber in the US doesn’t do.
Uber said they were going to change their
business model in Vienna but have yet to
return to the market
Transportation - Best Option
If you won’t be traveling through public
transportation a lot, the single pass is
the best move.
If you will be, then the 24, 48, or 72 hour
passes are well worth the money.
Taxis are not optimal compared to the
public transportation, as they can get
expensive and traffic can be bad
sometimes.
