• After two months of a rising rate, Indianapolis unemployment fell to
4.1%, according to the most recent estimates available from the BLS.
The state’s unemployment rate remained steady at 4.4% for its fourth
consecutive month.
• Industry supersector Trade, Transportation, & Utilities had record-
breaking employment levels for a third consecutive month and
continues to have the greatest year-over-year job growth. The
Financial Services supersector also had a strong month, posting its
first increase in employment since July 2015 by adding 400 jobs.
• 2016 began on a relatively soft note for the U.S., with only 151,000 net
new jobs created during the month. In comparison, the six-month
average totals 214,500 new jobs.
• National unemployment fell to 4.9 percent in January, the first time
that it recorded a sub-5.0 percent figure since 2008, while total
unemployment stayed put at 9.9 percent.
