  1. Once the core specimens are produced in the sgc, they are placed into the hamburg fixture. To make this work, flats are cut on the two cores so they make direct contact with one another.
  2. And what do we do with hamburg data – well, there are sensors in the machine that measure how much the rut depth in the HMA changes with each repetition of the wheel In concept, what happens is the red line. The rutting develops slowly (flat slope)and then the mix reaches a point where it starts to fail much faster. The idea here is that at the “knee” The mix is sufficiently failed so that moisture has reduced the stiffness and strength and durability of the mix so that it fails faster. The specs for this test are typically we want less than ½ in. rutting over 20,000 cycles. However, what we see in many mixes we’ve tested is much better performance. These mixes don’t reach the knee – I call these rut resistant mixes here – in green.
