Fossil fuels
Fossil fuels are natural substances formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals. The main types are coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal forms over millions of years as dead plant matter is buried under layers of mud and compressed. Oil and natural gas also form from buried remains of ancient microorganisms. Fossil fuels are important energy sources and are used to generate electricity, for transportation, heating homes and more, but their extraction and accidents causing spills can significantly damage the environment.

Coal forms over millions of years as dead plants are buried under layers of mud and sand. The heat and pressure causes their carbon content to increase, forming hard black coal. Oil forms similarly from ancient plankton and algae buried deep underground. Natural gas also forms from buried organisms subjected to heat and pressure over long periods. Fossil fuels are important sources of energy that are extracted and refined for use in transportation, manufacturing, heating homes and more, though their extraction can also cause environmental damage through incidents like oil spills.

Experiments show yeast producing carbon dioxide that dissolves in water, lowering the pH and demonstrating how ocean acidification occurs.
