JESUS—OUR PASSOVER LAMB
What Does It Mean for Christians?
OUR SOVEREIGN GOD
History really is His-Story. He wrote the script before creation
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…” Shakespeare
God, the Great Playwright, has written a story in the OT things that foreshadows
the NT story. We call those things types
Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what
is to come later in the story.
Ex. Last week:The bronze serpent, lifted up, healed people (Numbers 21:8).
This is type of the lifted-up Christ on the cross (John 3:14; 12:32), through
whom spiritual & physical healing comes (Isaiah 53:5).
WHY STUDY
THE OLDTESTAMENT?
IT WAS THE BIBLE OF JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES FOR HUNDREDS
OFYEARS UNTIL THE NT WAS PUBLISHED
OT "was written for your instruction, that by steadfastness and by the
encouragement of the scriptures you might have hope" (Romans
15:4).
“The new is in the old concealed; the old is in the new revealed.”
CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE LIFE, DEATH AND RESURRECTION
FO JESUS WITHOUT A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE OT.
Before Creation, God decides to make people so He can share
His Kingdom with. He longs to love & cherish them as His own
children.
He knows they will choose self-reliance, self-exaltation and other
gods most of the time. They will love sin instead of God.
They will insult God.
He knows that their desire for sin will create a deep divide
between God and Humans.
They will be hostile to Him and He will be hostile to
their sins. He knows that will keep them out of heaven and
condemn them to eternal punishment.
He decides to send Jesus to He decides to have Jesus suffer
and die to save the human race from the just penalty of their
sins.
Jesus will become a man and shed His blood on a wooden
cross. The wood will be covered with His blood. Jesus becomes
“the Lamb, slain from the foundation of the
world.” ( Rom. 13:8)
To do that, in 2200 BC, He chooses one man—Abram—a
worshipper of false gods in a city called Ur ( now Iraq)—to start
one nation—Israel—to bring forth Jesus as their Savior.
God moved Abram to a new land and spoke to him
Abram—see those stars: Innumerable—Your descendants will be
like the stars. But let Me change your name:
You will be Abraham now—father of many. In you shall all the
families of the earth be blessed" (Genesis 12:1–3)
Your people will be enslaved for 400 years but I will bring them
out and give them this land where you are now. They will be My
people and I will be their God
In 1500 BC, God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of
Egypt, Out of slavery to the land promised to Abraham.
But, God sent 10 plagues to prove to the Egyptians and to the
Israelites that He was the One, true God over all false gods.
In the tenth plague, God said He would kill the first-born of all
families, both human and of beast—except for one certain
group of families.
THE TENTH PLAGUE ( EX. 12):
THE PASSOVER EVENT
“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike
down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will
bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.
The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are,
and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No
destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
THE TENTH PLAGUE ( EX. 12)
Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them,“Go at
once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the
Passover lamb.
Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some
of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe.
None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning.
When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he
will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and
will pass over that doorway, and He will not permit the destroyer to
enter your houses and strike you down.”
THE FIRST PASSOVER
Get one-year old lamb with no defects
Slaughter and put blood on top and sides of your door
Roast the lamb ( sheep or goat) and eat
Do not go out of your house that night!
The Lord’s death angel will pass over those houses!
CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER LAMB
In 33 AD, Egypt is a type of the entire world lost in sin
The devil is now pharaoh
John the Baptist is now Moses
Jesus is the Passover Lamb whose blood is shed on a wooden cross for all
mankind.
God passes over the sins of everyone who believes in the bleeding Jesus and
they are saved from eternal death.
Jesus becomes the Door to life, a door covered with His blood shed on
Calvary.
Jesus commands His followers to remember His sacrifice with a meal of
bread and wine.
The wine represents the saving blood of God’s NT perfect,
sinless, Passover Lamb.
The Passover bread represents the broken body of the Lamb of God.
Salvation is the new Exodus. Heaven is the Promised Land
The Holy Spirit is the Cloud by Day and the Fire by night
Grace replaces the Law. Jesus and his disciples modify some OT
laws.
The New covenant replaces the Old covenant.
Passover 2018 will be celebrated from March 30- April 7.
1 Cor. 5:7 – “Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed”
“God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice through faith in
His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because
in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed
beforehand.” (Romans 3:25)
