-learning is known by many, widely varying definitions which take into consideration the reciprocal needs of the student and community, bridging academic theory with community service and instilling civic responsibility. Service combined with learning adds value to each and transforms both. Service-learning must be an academic activity: it can be course-based, competency-based, or a structured volunteer experience. In dental education the most obvious community locations are community health center dental clinics, hospital dental clinics, and private offices in areas designated as dental health professions shortage areas (DHPSA). Most importantly, service-learning occurs only when both the providers and the recipients of the service benefit from the activities.
Although service-learning is now a major national movement, it is still catching on as a new approach in education. Kim Isringhausen will provide a framework for service-learning in dental and dental hygiene education in which planning, implementation and evaluation can be built.
A critical transition point for entry into the professoriate is a postdoctoral experience. In the STEM and biomedical science fields, one or more years of work as a postdoc are increasingly required for advancement into tenure-track faculty positions, but according to recent NSF data only 8.3 percent of postdoctoral scholars in those fields were from underrepresented backgrounds. Furthermore, underrepresented postdocs are not entering tenure-track faculty positions in sufficient numbers, especially at research-intensive institutions. During this webinar, we will explore known barriers to minority postdoc success as well as the efficacy of national programs designed to advance them to the professoriate (e.g. NIH IRACDA). Speakers will also highlight successful regional programs, such as the Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity. The webinar will conclude with information about a proposed action item to partner with national stakeholders to evaluate the impact of diversity programs on postdoctoral scholars.
The first in a two-part webinar series presented by US Healthiest and its HealthLead initiative, this webinar will focus on student peer-to-peer "Wellness Champions" within institutions of higher learning. Featuring Ohio State University's student well-being program and its student wellness champions as a case study.
Learning Objectives
As a participant, you will learn how to:
Recruit and train student wellness champions
Leverage your network to promote your wellness initiatives
Engage your student population in wellness initiatives
This workshop is designed for school districts, medical providers, and community agencies interested in providing services on school campuses or opening school-based health centers. The focus of this workshop will be planning stages, partnership building, needs assessments, SBHC principles, consent/confidentiality, establishing MOUs, and best practices of school integration and building a community of care.
