Jeff Powers (Occipital): The Commoditization of Positional Tracking As virtual reality and mixed reality systems reach broader adoption, more companies require the need for positional tracking to precisely match user movement with rendered content. Yet what initially began as a key competitive advantage has quickly evolved into a complex yet commonplace commodity. Lighthouse has been open-sourced. Inside-out positional tracking can be done with consumer-grade sensors. And future mobile devices will likely come with much of the sensor package required to enable 6-DoF positional tracking. While some aspects of positional tracking are being commoditized, others are still difficult open challenges. Object detection models are vital for many computer vision applications. They can show where an object is in a video stream, or how many objects are present. But they’re also very resource-intensive—models like MobileNet SSD can analyze a few frames per second on a Raspberry Pi 4, using a significant amount of RAM. This has put object detection out of reach for the most interesting devices: microcontrollers.
Microcontrollers are cheap, small, ubiquitous and energy efficient—and are thus attractive for adding computer vision to everyday devices. But microcontrollers are also very resource-constrained, with clock speeds of up to 200 MHz and less than 256 Kbytes of RAM—far too little to run complex object detection models. This slide is my observation of VRAR technology and market with my visiting in CES 2018. Although the VR market has been going up and down in past three years, market leaders (like Vive or so) are still pushing the product spec toward better experience (finer resolution and wireless), and start-up companies are focusing on innovative tracking solutions for whole-body and fingers. Oriense presentation for Startup Cup World Final (March 2014)
There are approximately 180 million visually impaired people worldwide, with the number growing each year to an estimated 275 million by 2020. Existing assistive devices for the blind, such as the OrCam and ultrasound canes, have limitations in providing full mobility and independence. The Oriense system aims to address these issues through a lightweight helmet-mounted stereocamera and display that can detect obstacles, navigate routes, and recognize text and objects using computer vision algorithms. The company's roadmap includes the development of multiple Oriense products at various price points and integration with public transportation to give visually impaired individuals greater freedom and independence of movement.

How exactly does Virtual and Augmented Reality game human perception so things we know aren’t there seem to exist? Can simple and robust public learning experiences empower and delight people of all ages to experiment and discover the answers for themselves? The answer is yes. This talk will present examples and discuss how UX best practices can be applied to create effective inquiry-based learning experiences that unpack seemingly complex modern technologies. Through iterative design coupled with repeated visitor testing, we deconstructed the surprising perceptual science and technology behind VR and AR into 16 cool hands-on experiences that spark “aha” moments and minimize the need for wordy explanations. We keep concepts intuitive, playful, and fun to understand. Our traveling exhibition goal is to show visitors they're smarter than they suspect, inspire students to aim for STEM careers, and help teachers lead deeper NGSS and Common Core dives both in and out of the classroom. Nick Klingensmith (Microsoft): Increasing Immersion with the MR Lighting Tools
The MR Lighting Tools is a Unity library and MRTK extension that estimates and replicates the current environment's lighting on additive displays to increase immersion in mixed reality. It works by using physically based rendering techniques to shade 3D objects based on the normal, texture, and estimated lighting captured from the environment's cameras, though cameras cannot fully capture how lighting appears to the human eye. The library is available from Microsoft and the developer hopes to expand it to include shadows and better account for room size to further improve immersion.

There are approximately 180 million visually impaired people worldwide, with the number growing each year to an estimated 275 million by 2020. Existing assistive devices for the blind, such as the OrCam and ultrasound canes, have limitations in providing full mobility and independence. The Oriense system aims to address these issues through a lightweight helmet-mounted stereocamera and display that can detect obstacles, navigate routes, and recognize text and objects using computer vision algorithms. The company's roadmap includes the development of multiple Oriense products at various price points and integration with public transportation to give visually impaired individuals greater freedom and independence of movement.

How exactly does Virtual and Augmented Reality game human perception so things we know aren’t there seem to exist? Can simple and robust public learning experiences empower and delight people of all ages to experiment and discover the answers for themselves? The answer is yes. This talk will present examples and discuss how UX best practices can be applied to create effective inquiry-based learning experiences that unpack seemingly complex modern technologies. Through iterative design coupled with repeated visitor testing, we deconstructed the surprising perceptual science and technology behind VR and AR into 16 cool hands-on experiences that spark “aha” moments and minimize the need for wordy explanations. We keep concepts intuitive, playful, and fun to understand. Our traveling exhibition goal is to show visitors they're smarter than they suspect, inspire students to aim for STEM careers, and help teachers lead deeper NGSS and Common Core dives both in and out of the classroom. The MR Lighting Tools is a Unity library and MRTK extension that estimates and replicates the current environment's lighting on additive displays to increase immersion in mixed reality. It works by using physically based rendering techniques to shade 3D objects based on the normal, texture, and estimated lighting captured from the environment's cameras, though cameras cannot fully capture how lighting appears to the human eye. The library is available from Microsoft and the developer hopes to expand it to include shadows and better account for room size to further improve immersion.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

In this session, we'll share insights on how we used PostgreSQL to facilitate precise searches across multiple fields in our mobile application. The techniques include using LIKE and ILIKE operators and integrating a trigram-based search to handle potential misspellings, thereby increasing the search accuracy.
We'll also discuss how the azure_ai extension on PostgreSQL databases in Azure and Azure AI Services were utilized to create vectors from user input, a feature beneficial when users wish to find specific items based on text prompts. While our application's case study involves a drug search, the techniques and principles shared in this session can be adapted to improve search functionality in a wide range of applications.
