Jeannie treasured an amber necklace given to her by her grandmother. The beads contained fossils of plants and insects that were trapped in resin from pine trees millions of years ago. Her grandfather had found the amber lump on the shore after a shipwreck, and carved the beads as a wedding gift. By reading a book, Jeannie learned that the Scottish Highlands were once covered by the same pine forests, and the sinking of the land underwater preserved the resin as amber deposits on the seafloor.

6.  Resin is a fluid (specifically, a
hydrocarbon) that is secreted
from certain plants , most
commonly coniferous trees
such as pine trees.
 Amber deposits usually
represent marine
environments. Amber deposits
form when resins produced in
forests are transported by
water to oceans or lakes,
where they are deposited into
the sedimentary layers.

7.  Once deposited, the resin chemically matures into intermediate
forms called copals and finally into amber after millions of
years.
 Resin that accumulates on the outside of a tree can act as an
insect trap. Fossils entombed in amber are referred to as
inclusions.
 The normal non-fossilized kind, have a lovely woody sweet
scent .

8.  Much valued from antiquity to the present as a
gemstone, amber is made into a variety of decorative
objects. Amber is used in jewellery. It has also been used as a
healing agent in folk medicine.
 There are also folklore and traditions associated with amber in
Scotland, but there is no sources for any amber.

immigrants from Scandinavia and northern Europe over the
millennia.

10.  One thing that Jeannie treasured was a necklace of amber
beads which she received from her grandmother on her twelfth
birthday. She spent a lot of time admiring the beads.

11.  Kenneth, Jeannie’s grandfather got them from the
wreck of a ship, Goshwak, which had sunk in the sea
waters near his home.
 It was clear, shining lump and all creatures had been
embedded in it. He had carved out the beads himself
and given to his wife as a wedding gift.
 His wife loved it and left it to her granddaughter,
Jeannie when she died.

12.  Jeannie read a book to find how the amber came on the
shore.
 She found that long before humans appeared on earth,
the Scottish Highlands were covered with trees like
oaks, poplars, beeches and pines.
 Shining yellow gum flowed out of a kind of tall pine trees.
It was fragrant and attracted insects. Once they landed
on it, they stuck to it and were soon covered by more
oozing drops.
 Bits of moss, leaves, acorns, cones and little sticks blown
by wind also stuck to the gum. The gum hardened with
time and became amber.

14.  There were movements inside the earth and the surface
changed with time.
 Due to these movements the great forests of the north of
Scotland sank into the deep sea. Lying at the bottom of
the ocean, the wood and the gum buried in the sand,
hardened like stone.

probably brought to the shore by one of the great storms.
 Jeannie realised that there must be more treasures on
the bottom of the sea yet to be discovered.
