Shade coffee farming has the potential to provide benefits to smallholder farmers in East Africa and contribute to biodiversity conservation. Shade coffee can increase yields and quality in suboptimal conditions, while providing diversified income sources and reducing pest and disease pressure. Shade coffee systems support higher levels of biodiversity than full sun coffee farms by maintaining a more structurally complex habitat. However, the conservation value of shade coffee depends on management practices and landscape factors. More research is needed to understand the impacts of shade coffee in East Africa.
