- According to the 2010 US Census, minorities account for 36.3% of the population - an increase from the 30.8% reported in the 2000 Census Increasing diversity in the library workforce is necessary so that libraries can better reflect the changing demographic profile of the communities they serve

- So now that we’re here what do we do?
- CALL TO ACTION: We need to get our fellow library school students involved in conferences, such as this one. EVERY LIBRARY STUDENT IS A WALKING BROCHURE FOR LIBRARIANSHIP!!! Upon graduation, students can carry that energy into different fields. Let’s explore.
- Academic librarians can advocate for the field by getting involved with student activities and using LIS students! It’s not rocket science, there are usually high attendance rates by undergraduates at university career fairs, so academic librarians, GET OUT THERE AND SHOW YOUR FACES!!
- Most of the stereotypes we heard earlier were developed through experiences in public libraries. Public librarians can participate in activities like storytelling and book festivals to promote what we REALLY look like and what we REALLY DO. Being a public librarian is about so much more than just the Dewey Decimal System!
- A great way to make yourself known as a School Media Librarian is by attending Teacher Career Fairs and advocating the potential of School Media Librarianship. School Media specialists can talk to classes about librarianship and introduce it to the children as a “job” that’s just as cool as being a firefighter or ballerina!
- Finally, librarians in special libraries have perhaps the greatest opportunity. Many people think that librarians can only work in a school, a public library, or an academic library. Special librarians can make themselves known by visiting undergraduate programs and promoting library schools. Let students know that there’s more to an arts degree, law degree, or science degree.
- These are just a few ideas to get you started with thinking about how you and your library can start promoting yourselves and recruiting diverse staff members.
