Japan – Introduction
About Japan
 Capital: Tokyo
 Population: 128 million
 Consists of several islands with
mountainous geography, a rugged
coast line, and few mineral resources
 Japan’s greatest natural resource is
the sea
Japanese Food Culture
Standard Japanese meal nearly
always consists :
 A bowl of cooked white Japanese
rice as shushoku accompanying
with tsukemono (pickles), a bowl of
soup, and a variety of dishes known
as okazu - fish, meat, vegetable, etc
Japanese Culture
 They bow to greet one another and their king.
 They have festivals to show respect for their land.
 They also respect their land by not littering.
 Old and special people get special greetings.
 For example, people bow VERY low.
 The lower you bow the more respect you give
 The Japanese use the carp (a type of fish) to
symbolize strength and courage.
 Japanese people believe that everything has a
spirit they call this kami.
 The most famous religion is shinto and buddhist .
 Sumo wrestling is a kind of sport.
 Sumo wrestlers weigh up to 300 pounds.
 Another popular sport is kendo.
 Kendo means the way of the sword. Samurai
and ninja do kendo to train.

Sushi
 Rice, usually topped with other ingredients
such as raw fish or vegetables
 Can be rolled in nori (pressed and dried
seaweed)
 Many different types, depending on
ingredients and presentation.
 Served with Shōyu, or soy sauce, and
wasabi

Noodles
 Noodles are very popular in Japanese
Cuisine.
Some varieties include:
 Ramen – thin, wheat based noodles in
soda water (familiar with American
Ramen)
 Udon - thick, wheat based noodles
 Soba – medium, buckwheat based
noodles
 Somen – very thin, wheat based noodles

Typical Meal
 A standard Japanese meal generally
consists of several different okazu
accompanying a bowl of cooked white
Japanese rice (gohan) is a bowl of soup
and some tsukemono (pickles).
Some examples of the popular meals are
 Nabemono (Japanese stews)
 Unagi (griled eel)
 Yakitori (grilled chicken)
 Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes)
 Oden (fish cake stew)
 Tempura
The typical Japanese meal consists of
 A bowl of rice (gohan)
 A bowl of miso soup (miso shiru)
 Pickled vegetables (tsukemono)
 Fish or Meat.

Chopsticks : A pair of even length sticks
that can be made out of wood, metal,
bamboo used for eating.

Behavior in Japan :
 Japanese bow to greet one another and their
king.
 They have festivals to show respect for their
land.
 Old and special people get special greetings.
 The lower you bow the more respect you give
Japanese Homes:
 People live in crowded citys. They have small
rooms. Some live in tall buildings.
 People take off their shoes at the door
because their floor is covered in tatami mats.
 At night time lots sleep on mats called futons.
 Business people wear suits. Grown ups wear
robes made of colored silk! The robes are
called kimonos. Today kimonos are only worn
on special days.

Japanese Dress & Sports
Traditional Dress & Attire :
 Wafuku
Traditional Japanese clothing, or wafuku,often
consists of intricate robes called kimonos worn
with a sash called an obi and sandals, either
zōri or geta.
 Harajuku style
It is a mix of all the well-known Japanese sub-
styles, for example Sweet lolita, Gothic lolita,
Visual kei, Cosplay, Decora, Gyaru, cutesy fairy
kei and punk rock clothing . Traditional
Japanese garments like kimonos and wooden
sandals have been infused into the style since
the beginning.
Sports :
 Sumo wrestling is a kind of sport
 Another popular sport is kendo. Kendo means
the way of the sword. Samurai and ninja do
kendo to train.

Japanese Religion & Environment
Religion:
 Shinto means the way of the gods.
 Japanese people believe that everything has
a spirit they call this kami.
 People honor kami at shrines.
 The most famous religion is shinto and
buddhist .
 Most people believe in both shinto and
buddhist.
 A buddhist beleif is that you are born over and
over again.
Environment:
 Three fourths or the islands are covered with
mountains.
 There islands are covered with volcanoes.
 Many animals live on their land like snow
monkeys , brown bears and deer.
 They saw the sunrise that’s why they named
their land sources of the sun.
 They called their land “Nippon”.

  • 5. 5 Japanese Food and Culture Japanese Culture Behavior in Japan :  Japanese bow to greet one another and their king.  They have festivals to show respect for their land.  Old and special people get special greetings.  The lower you bow the more respect you give Japanese Homes:  People live in crowded citys. They have small rooms. Some live in tall buildings.  People take off their shoes at the door because their floor is covered in tatami mats.  At night time lots sleep on mats called futons.  Business people wear suits. Grown ups wear robes made of colored silk! The robes are called kimonos. Today kimonos are only worn on special days.
  • 6. 6 Japanese Food and Culture Japanese Dress & Sports Traditional Dress & Attire :  Wafuku Traditional Japanese clothing, or wafuku,often consists of intricate robes called kimonos worn with a sash called an obi and sandals, either zōri or geta.  Harajuku style It is a mix of all the well-known Japanese sub- styles, for example Sweet lolita, Gothic lolita, Visual kei, Cosplay, Decora, Gyaru, cutesy fairy kei and punk rock clothing . Traditional Japanese garments like kimonos and wooden sandals have been infused into the style since the beginning. Sports :  Sumo wrestling is a kind of sport  Another popular sport is kendo. Kendo means the way of the sword. Samurai and ninja do kendo to train.
  • 7. 7 Japanese Food and Culture Japanese Religion & Environment Religion:  Shinto means the way of the gods.  Japanese people believe that everything has a spirit they call this kami.  People honor kami at shrines.  The most famous religion is shinto and buddhist .  Most people believe in both shinto and buddhist.  A buddhist beleif is that you are born over and over again. Environment:  Three fourths or the islands are covered with mountains.  There islands are covered with volcanoes.  Many animals live on their land like snow monkeys , brown bears and deer.  They saw the sunrise that’s why they named their land sources of the sun.  They called their land “Nippon”.
