This document discusses living out renewed lives according to God's will. It says that God's will for believers will not be evident until they sacrificially test themselves by choosing a different path than what the world offers. It urges believers to offer their bodies as living sacrifices to God and not conform to patterns of the world. By renewing their minds through God's word, prayer, and the Holy Spirit's work, believers can be transformed and better able to understand and approve God's good, pleasing, and perfect will.
This document discusses becoming "Changers" through three types of changes:
1. Believe by repenting, believing, being baptized, and joining. Baptism in the New Testament refers to immersion rather than sprinkling and is a personal decision.
2. Become perfect by transforming your mind, examining yourself, and doing all things for God's glory.
3. "Put off" sins and negative behaviors by putting them to death, and "put on" virtues like compassion by clothing yourself with them. Let peace rule and the message of Christ dwell in you.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." ~ Romans 12:2 (NIV)
The document discusses how divisions within the church can cause it to lose power and effectiveness, similar to how obstacles cause a snowball to break apart as it rolls downhill. It calls for Christians to commit fully to God, surrender past issues, and allow themselves to be molded together as one church under God. When the church is united and lifts each other up through prayer, it can grow in size and influence others through spreading God's message.
This document outlines plans for a church's transform kick-off weekend focused on Romans 12:1-8 and sacrifice. It includes prayers for the weekend, questions for reflection on presenting one's body as a living sacrifice and being transformed by renewing the mind, and key verses from Romans 12 on using spiritual gifts. The goals are to renovate sites to unleash ministry potential, pay down mortgages to free up resources, and transform more people and families.
The document discusses dedicating one's life to God. It notes that Romans 12:1-2 urges believers to offer their bodies as living sacrifices to God. When dedicating one's life to God, one should (1) offer their bodies, (2) as living sacrifices that are (3) holy and pleasing to God. By doing so, believers are transformed as their minds are renewed and able to understand God's will. Dedicating one's life to God results in benefits, both on earth and eternally with God.

To God All the Glory!
This passage from 1 Corinthians discusses how Christians are like the different parts of a body, with Christ as the head. While members have different gifts and roles, they are all interconnected. No one part is more important than another. The Spirit has placed each person in the body as God desired, and all parts should support each other so the body functions as a unified whole, without division or jealousy.
This document provides a summary of a booklet titled "Powerful Prayers Every Catholic Should Know" published by The Mary Foundation. It includes over 30 common Catholic prayers such as the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, prayers to saints, prayers for different occasions, and prayers related to Mass. The document encourages readers to distribute copies of the booklet to others and order more from The Mary Foundation.
God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways. The document discusses how God chooses those who are weak, foolish, humble, compassionate, imperfect, forgiven, faithful and surrendered. God uses ordinary people so that no one can boast and all glory goes to God. The document encourages the reader to fully give their life to God so that he can use them for his purposes.
Not only do we identify with Christ, but Christ identifies with us. We are the body of Christ as He has chosen to make Himself known through the church.
1) The document discusses spiritual health in a congregation, describing it as when spiritual parenting and tutoring are common, and spiritual reproduction can be observed.
2) It examines the Parable of the Sower, explaining how the seed represents the word of God, and different types of people represent different reactions - some reject the message, some accept it intellectually but not fully, and some allow the Holy Spirit to produce fruit in their lives.
3) It categorizes types of Christians as spiritual, acceptable, self-dependent/carnal, and discusses moving along a path from an undisciplined believer to a disciplined believer focused on inward transformation.
The document outlines a sermon discussing how believers can achieve success through setting goals, learning from failures and mistakes, and working hard. It encourages believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices to God by not conforming to the ways of the world and renewing their minds. Several bible verses are cited exhorting believers to deny themselves, take up their crosses, take hold of instruction which is their life, and to be steadfast and abounding in the work of the Lord.
The book of Colossians discusses holiness and what it means to be holy. It encourages believers to set their minds on heavenly things rather than earthly concerns. It instructs Christians to put off their old sinful nature and put on the new self through Christ. Holiness is presented not as a list of rules but as living a life of obedience and faith motivated by God's grace. Believers are called to do all things in the name of Jesus Christ with wholehearted dedication to God.
The document contains the lyrics of several Christian songs and hymns that praise God, express faith in God, and reference key beliefs such as the Apostles' Creed. It also includes a brief passage from Romans about spiritual gifts and using them for the benefit of the church. Overall, the document focuses on Christian worship, doctrine, and community.
This document discusses the importance of living with an attitude of gratitude as a growing Christian. It says that Christians should be confident in their salvation, disciplined in reading the Bible, committed to their local church, maintain constant joy through the Holy Spirit, and continue in prayer. Living with gratitude is more than just being thankful on holidays - Christians should be thankful in all circumstances because it is God's will. The document provides reasons to be thankful like eternal life, the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and physical blessings. Christians are instructed to express gratitude to God in worship and prayer, and to others through kind words. They can do this even in trials because God is in control and works all things for good.
The document discusses the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that are received at Baptism and strengthened at Confirmation: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. It also describes the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are signs that the Holy Spirit is alive within us and helping us live out our faith, including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity.
The Christ Centered Life (Part 5): Everybody is SomebodyDavid Turner
The document discusses Paul's first letter to the Corinthians about the body of Christ. It makes several key points:
1) All Christians are part of the body of Christ regardless of background. We were all baptized by one Spirit.
2) No part of the body is more important - we all have a role to play. Don't underestimate your importance or overestimate it.
3) The body has many diverse members with different gifts. We should celebrate this diversity rather than argue over who has the best gifts. Love is more important than any gift.
The document summarizes the biblical account of Pentecost in Acts 2. It describes how the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples as tongues of fire, allowing them to speak in other languages. When a crowd gathered confused by this phenomenon, Peter addressed them and preached about Christ, his death and resurrection. He cited scripture and urged the crowd to believe in Jesus as both Lord and Messiah.
The document discusses faithful listening to God's word in order to cultivate a hunger for it, find God's plan, obey what is true, and celebrate life in Christ. It then summarizes passages from Acts 1 where Jesus appears to the apostles after resurrection and instructs them to remain in Jerusalem and await the Holy Spirit, and that they will receive power to be witnesses for Jesus in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the earth. The document connects this to Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew to make disciples of all nations.
This document announces a Firstfruits Offering Weekend event focused on Romans 12:1-8 and being transformed by Jesus Christ. The event will include praying together, discussing how Christ transforms individuals and communities, and making firstfruits offerings or commitments to support renovating church sites and programs for praising the One Who Transforms. This document discusses the marks of a gospel-centered church based on passages from Acts 4. It describes how the early church in Acts was of one heart and soul and shared possessions in common (unity), the apostles powerfully testified to Jesus' resurrection (testimony), there was no one in need as they generously shared their wealth (giving), and Barnabas, whose name means encourager, sold land and gave the money to the apostles (encouragement). Reclaiming gospel-centeredness involves enjoying these graces of unity, testimony, giving, and encouragement that flow from focusing on the gospel.

2. From 1 Corinthians - do not allow factions to dominate us
3. Focus on Christ
The document discusses the difference between making promises and making commitments. It argues that commitments are better because they require loyalty, keeping one's word, and achieving what one committed to do, whereas people often make promises they do not keep. The document encourages making commitments to God rather than promises, and committing one's whole self to spiritual growth, the local church community, and sharing the gospel with others.

Ecclesiology Part 2 - The Purpose of the Church.Robert Tan
Here you go Part 2 of the study of Ecclesiology.
I shared a study on Ecclesiology in church.
1. The Nature of the Church.
2. The Purpose of the Church.
This document provides an overview and analysis of Romans 12:1-21 from the Bible. It discusses several key points:
1. Paul urges Christians to offer their bodies as living sacrifices to God through spiritual worship and transforming their minds by renewing them with Scripture.
2. Believers should use their spiritual gifts, such as teaching, serving, giving, and showing mercy, for the common good and without pride.
3. Christians are called to sincere love of one another, practicing hospitality, blessing persecutors, rejoicing with others, and living in harmony with all people. They should overcome evil with good.
This document discusses how believers are called to be "Changers" - continually changing and growing in their faith. It outlines three key changes:
1) Believe in Jesus - have faith in him, as many did when they saw his signs.
2) Pursue perfection - continually renew your mind and test yourself, striving to be perfect as God is perfect.
3) Put off old sins and put on Christlike virtues - rid yourself of anger, lust, etc. and instead clothe yourself with love, kindness, patience, etc., letting Christ's message dwell in you richly.
Sure You're Mature_Session 8_Looking for God's Willroadsidebbc
Sure You're Mature's session regarding the search for God's Will.
Sure You're Mature was a values formation event for the young professionals of today, and was held at Road Side Bible Baptist Church from December 26-29, 2010. The event was attended by different churches.
The document discusses key concepts from 1 Corinthians, including:
- Investors, detractors, and destroyers - with investors building "heaven's gold" by balancing God's sovereignty and man's responsibility through discipline and hard work.
- Man's responsibility includes building the foundation of faith and removing evil, while God's sovereignty provides gifts like revelation, inspiration, and sanctification.
- Understanding doctrines requires discerning long-term principles behind specific historical contexts.
- The document prompts reflection on how to discern right investments over diversions, handle detractors, and avoid taking God's grace for granted.
The document provides an overview of a discipleship conference focused on recovering one's first love for Jesus, discovering the need for rest in God, and uncovering the path to reasonable service. It discusses how believers can lose their first love through sin, failure, pressures and living inauthentically. To regain love, one must rest in Jesus' finished work through faith. The first step of discipleship is recognizing one's complete need for Christ. Putting off the old self and being transformed requires resting in God's decrees of redemption and having a cleansed conscience through Christ. Good works prepared by God result from transformation and include caring for those in need.
The document discusses how Christians can practice true worship and holiness based on Romans 12. It explains that Romans 12 instructs believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices to God in light of the doctrines established in Romans 1-11 regarding salvation by faith and new life. Christians are called not to conform to the world but to be transformed by renewing their minds on God's will. They are to think soberly and not more highly than they ought according to the measure of faith given by God.
Victory and Desperation - Spring 2016 ACEaustinexec
The Holy Spirit indwells us to connect us to God, baptizes us into the church body, and fills us to draw closer to Him while equipping us to love and serve others. Are you ready to live a life desperate for God, trusting Him completely?
The document discusses examining one's spiritual health and anatomy by reviewing key parts of a Christian's spiritual body - their eyes, feet, hands, tongue, mind, heart, and overall body. It provides Bible verses about each part and emphasizes that Christians should have watchful eyes, feet ready to spread the gospel, clean hands, a controlled tongue, a unified mind focused on God, a healthy heart, and protect their body with truth, righteousness, faith in God, and His word. The goal is for Christians to become healthier spiritually to better serve God.
The document provides commentary on Romans 14:1-23. It summarizes that Paul is addressing disputes in the early Christian churches in Rome between Jews and Gentiles over observance of ceremonial laws and dietary restrictions. Paul teaches that Christians should accept one another without judging over disputable matters, as everyone will answer to God. Believers are to prioritize unity, mutual edification, and not being a stumbling block to others through their actions.
What does now offer to Christians? In Christ we have NOW all these: Our salvation is nearer; we are justified; we are reconciled; we have no condemnation; we are and have light; we have life; we are part of a diving family; we have access to mercy. All of these are available NOW to anyone in Christ.
Similar to January 1 2017 message 3 with notes (20)
The document discusses the meaning and purpose of life. It argues that without Christ, life is meaningless and temporary, as everything done "under the sun" is ultimately futile. However, with Christ life has both temporary and eternal fulfillment. It encourages focusing on eternal rather than temporary things and confessing pride and desires of the flesh that distract from knowing God. Overall it conveys that only through faith in Christ can life's true meaning be found.
The document discusses how God uses opposition and persecution to strengthen believers' witness and faith. It describes how King Herod arrested and imprisoned Peter, intending to put him on trial after Passover. However, the church prayed fervently for Peter, and an angel appeared to free him from prison. Peter then went to a house where believers were gathered and praying before leaving for another place. The opposition faced by early Christians like Peter served to display God's power and further the spread of the gospel message.
The document discusses when and how followers of Jesus were first called Christians. It describes how after Stephen's death, believers scattered from Jerusalem preaching the gospel not just to Jews but also Greeks in Antioch. Barnabas was sent to Antioch and saw evidence of God's grace, encouraging the believers. He found Saul and brought him to Antioch to teach believers for a year, and it was during this time that disciples in Antioch were first called Christians. The document also provides a definition of what it means to be a Christian according to the Bible.
Peter heals a paralytic man in Lydda and raises a woman named Tabitha from the dead in Joppa, increasing believers there. God tells Peter in a vision to no longer call unclean what he has made clean. Peter is then called to the house of Cornelius, a Roman centurion, where he realizes God accepts all nations who fear him. Peter preaches to Cornelius and other Gentiles about Jesus, and the Holy Spirit comes upon them, astonishing Jewish believers. Peter baptizes the Gentile believers.
Saul, who was persecuting Christians, experienced a vision of Jesus on the road to Damascus and was blinded. He was instructed to go to Damascus where a disciple named Ananias restored his sight. Saul then began preaching that Jesus is the Son of God, astonishing the disciples who knew of his prior persecution. However, he was in danger from a Jewish conspiracy and was sent to Jerusalem, where the disciples were initially wary of him due to his history of persecution, but Barnabas vouched for his conversion and preaching.
The document discusses Jesus cleansing the temple in Jerusalem and foretelling his resurrection after being killed. It references Bible passages where Jesus drives money changers and merchants from the temple because it had become a place of business rather than worship. When questioned by Jews about his authority, Jesus says he will destroy and rebuild the temple in three days, referring to his body. After Jesus' death and resurrection, his disciples remember this prophecy and believe in him. The document emphasizes that Jesus is the resurrected temple inviting all people to worship him.
1) Jesus sends two disciples ahead into a village to find a colt that has never been ridden, telling them to say "The Lord has need of it" if anyone questions them.
2) The disciples find the colt as Jesus said and bring it to him. Jesus rides into Jerusalem on the colt while his disciples spread their coats on the road before him, fulfilling a prophecy.
3) As Jesus approaches Jerusalem, the disciples praise God joyfully for Jesus' miracles, but some Pharisees complain. Jesus says that if the disciples become silent, the stones will cry out instead.
Stephen gives a powerful witness before the Sanhedrin, recounting the history of Israel. When he sees a vision of Jesus at God's right hand, the Jewish leaders stone him to death. His martyrdom leads to a great persecution that scatters Christians throughout Judea and Samaria, while Saul ravages the church. God uses Stephen's suffering witness to advance the gospel despite the persecution.
The document discusses the organization of the early church in Acts 6. As the number of disciples grew, there was a complaint that some widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. The twelve apostles decided to appoint seven men to oversee this task, so that the apostles could focus on prayer and preaching. These deacons were chosen by the congregation and ordained by the apostles to care for the physical needs of the church members, allowing the church to fulfill its mission and serve all people.
The high priests arrested the apostles for teaching about Jesus but an angel freed them. When brought before the high priests again, the apostles preached boldly about obeying God rather than men. A Jewish leader convinced the high priests to just flog the apostles and let them go. The apostles left rejoicing that they passed the test and continued preaching the gospel daily.
The document discusses how Ananias and Sapphira lied about how much money they received from selling property, seeking glory for themselves rather than giving glory to God. When confronted by Peter, Ananias died immediately and Sapphira died later after confessing. This brought great fear upon the early church. The Spirit works to empower believers' witness and correct pride, showing grace to those who seek Christ's glory but anger toward those who seek their own glory. The church succeeds when it seeks God's power for witness, unity among people, and purity by putting away sin.
The document summarizes Acts 8:1-8 which describes early Christians spreading the gospel after persecution forced them to flee Jerusalem. It discusses:
I. Common servants dying and suffering for the gospel while Saul increased persecution.
II. Persecuted Christians went about preaching the word of God in places like Samaria.
III. Philip performed miracles in Samaria which affirmed the power of the gospel message, resulting in many conversions and great joy.
The document describes how Peter and John were arrested for preaching about Jesus and performing miracles in his name. When brought before religious leaders, they were commanded to stop speaking about Jesus. However, Peter and John refused, saying they must obey God rather than men. They were threatened but released due to popular support. The early Christians then prayed, asking God for boldness to continue preaching despite persecution. Their prayer was answered when the Holy Spirit filled them with boldness to speak God's word.
Peter and John heal a lame man in the name of Jesus at the temple. When a crowd gathers out of amazement, Peter preaches to them about how Jesus was the Messiah foretold by the prophets. He urges the crowd to repent and turn to Jesus so that their sins may be forgiven. Peter testifies that they were witnesses to Jesus being raised from the dead by God.
The document summarizes key events from Acts 2 regarding the establishment of the early church. It describes how about 3,000 people were baptized after being convicted by Peter's message to repent and believe in Jesus. The early believers devoted themselves to learning from the apostles, fellowship, sharing meals together, and prayer. They lived communally, selling possessions to help those in need. The church grew as the Lord added daily to their numbers those who were being saved.
This document discusses how to become a witness for Christ. It describes Jesus' ascension into heaven and the disciples returning to Jerusalem. The disciples devoted themselves to prayer with Jesus' mother Mary and brothers. Peter addressed the group of 120 and said they must choose a new apostle to replace Judas. Two men, Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias, were chosen. They prayed and cast lots to decide, and Matthias was selected to replace Judas and become one of the twelve apostles. Becoming a witness for Christ requires faithful obedience and trusting what is known to be true.
The document discusses several key points about Christianity:
1) It summarizes key events from Acts 11, including the first great Gentile harvest in Antioch, Christians first being called by that name in Antioch, and the first missionaries being sent out from Antioch.
2) It provides statistics about changes in the geographic distribution of Christians over time, with most now living in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
3) It notes research showing that a majority of youth who grew up in church stop attending within a decade of leaving home, and most churches are not effectively reaching young adults aged 18-29.
4) It encourages readers to be encouraged that they can see God
Global migration is happening at an unprecedented rate, with over 200 million migrants worldwide. This has resulted in over 150 unreached people groups now living in North Carolina alone. The document advocates discovering these people groups through their community institutions like markets and salons. This discovery then naturally leads to engagement, where relationships can be formed by being honest about wanting to share the gospel. The goal is to go to these groups in their communities rather than isolating them, make disciples, and plant churches to reach these groups with the gospel.
1) God sent his Son, Jesus Christ, when the time was right in order to redeem humanity from being under the law, so that through faith people could be adopted as sons of God.
2) God sent the Holy Spirit into the hearts of believers, crying "Abba, Father," confirming their adoption as sons and making them heirs along with Jesus Christ.
3) Through faith in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit, God the Father has provided the gift of sonship, making believers no longer slaves but sons and daughters with all the rights and privileges of God's family.
The passage describes the story from the Bible in Matthew 2:1-12 of the magi following a star to bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the infant Jesus. It explains the symbolic meaning of the gifts: gold was for the king, frankincense for God, and myrrh for the sacrificial savior. When we direct our hearts to worshipping Christ as our treasure, we will find great joy this Christmas.

The Book of Ruth is included in the third division, or the Writings, of the Hebrew Bible. In most Christian canons it is treated as one of the historical books and placed between Judges and 1 Samuel.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

January 1 2017 message 3 with notes
1. Living Out Renewed Lives
Good Morning and
Happy New Year Open
Door Family and to our
Guests
2. Living Out Renewed Lives
Romans 12: 1-2
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view
of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true
and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern
of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect
will
3. Living Out Renewed Lives
Main Point for Today:
As believers, God’s will for our lives will not
become evident until we sacrificially test
ourselves by choosing a different path than
the path this world offers.
4. Living Out Renewed Lives
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view
of God’s Mercy………
Romans 11:17-21 -- 17
If some of the branches have been
broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been
grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing
sap from the olive root, 18
do not consider yourself to be
superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You
do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19
You will
say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted
in.” 20
Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief,
and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. 21
For
if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare
you either.
5. Living Out Renewed Lives
1 … to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy
and pleasing to God
Romans 6:13 -- Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an
instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God
as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer
every part of yourself to him as an instrument of
righteousness
Romans 6:19 -- I am using an example from everyday life
because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer
yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing
wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness
leading to holiness.
6. Living Out Renewed Lives
2 … Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind..
Conformed – An Inward Reality
Pattern of this World – The age we live in
Transformation – An outward expression
7. Living Out Renewed Lives
2 … Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind..
**Renewal Must Be Biblically Motivated
**Renewal Will Take Time
8. Living Out Renewed Lives
2 … Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind..
• The Word of God
• Through Prayer
• Through the work of the Holy Spirit
•….. And when these things became priorities
9. Living Out Renewed Lives
• 2 -- ……. then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is, his good pleasing and perfect will.
• Examples – 1 Peter 5:3 – to the Flock
• Imitate – Hebrews 13:7 – their faith
• Practice – Philippians 4:9 – what is learned and seen
• Walk – Philippians 3:17 – in the examples we see
• Trustworthy – 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 – Stewards
• Serve – Mark 10:45 – Jesus – servant / not served
10. Living Out Renewed Lives
• 2 -- ……. then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is, his good pleasing and perfect will.
• Question: What has been the most rewarding part
of care group life, and the biggest challenge?
“the sacrifice we do each week to meet and keep it
going, has grown us spiritually and has strengthened
our marriage”
11. Living Out Renewed Lives
• Find a place to serve – If possible, with your spouse
• If you are single, get a friend or someone with the
same gift, and start serving together
• Consider committing to service in an area for a year
(And don’t be afraid to serve in an area outside of
your comfort zone)
12. Living Out Renewed Lives
1 Corinthians 15:3-8
For what I received I passed on to you as of first
importance[a]
: that Christ died for our sins according
to the Scriptures, 4
that he was buried, that he was
raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5
and that he appeared to Cephas,[b]
and then to the
Twelve. 6
After that, he appeared to more than five
hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time,
most of whom are still living, though some have
fallen asleep. 7
Then he appeared to James, then to
all the apostles, 8
and last of all he appeared to me

13. Living Out Renewed Lives
Main Point for Today:
As believers, God’s will for our lives will not become
evident until we sacrificially test ourselves by
choosing a different path than the path this world

Editor's Notes
--Thankful to have the opportunity to speak to you today
--Lots of firsts / several out of comfort zone
--Our History at Open Door have provided many teaching opps– 3 and 4 year olds (SS / Awana 11 years), ABF class, and Litchford Nursing (with ABF)
--THIS IS DIFFERENT – You get to hear Dwayne every Sunday, and there are a whole lot of you!
--BUT, you are also family – our family, even if you are visiting, so I am excited for us to study God’s word together today!
Our verses for today – Romans 12:1-2
Why these two verses today?
January 1 and the topic of renewal
My dad – want to do this for him – his favorite verses
Next Slide: Read Romans 12:1-2, then pray
Read verse -- (Prayer)
Before we dig in, just a thought as to why Paul was writing this letter – It is a church he had never visited, and unlike many of the other churches he wrote, he was not trying to correct ungodly living. His main purpose, we think, was twofold. To present the rich truths of the faith (chapters 1-11), and to share practical applications to those truths in the remaining chapters.
Next Slide: **So let’s consider our main point for today’s study:
The main point ‘restates’ the passage in this way.
--I grew up in a home where this thought was not evident. We went to church, and even sat on the front row – but my parents would say we were on the worlds path.
--In college, parents came to the Lord (mom first, then dad)
--They began to choose a different path – friends changed, bible study became important – and they began to serve.
--And they had some testing, not necessarily the kind that lead to death – one thing that had an impact – Dad and announcing (missed few games/my birthdate – Valvano Monday games) – in its own way, it became an example to others.
**They were choosing a different path---
Next Slide – So let’s look into the passage
--Therefore – points to the doxology at the end of Chapter 11 – Since all things are for his Glory – we therefore must offer ourselves (read 11:36)
--I urge, you brothers and sisters – **It’s what we do every Sunday! Dwayne speaks from the word, we acknowledge HIS authority as an ordained teacher of the word, and we know he is using God’s truth. He uses God’s word to encourage us, and to urge change in us! In the same way, Paul had authority to speak, as an apostle and the messenger of Jesus – so these words would have been carrying meaning as he spent countless chapters sharing truths to those in Rome.
--in view of God’s Mercy – OK – we love sharing with the kids what Mercy is and what Grace is
**Mercy – not getting something we do deserve
**Grace – getting something we do not deserve
Olives were an important crop of that time – Trees produced for a long time – some branches would die, and ones from younger trees would be grafted in.
**Paul is saying that we as Gentiles, now can partake of the richness of the TRUE Olive Tree – the place of God’s blessing through Abraham
SO – this is the Mercy of God – that we are NO LONGER subject to the eventual outcome of the Wild Olive Tree – something that we do deserve
Next Slide – Finish out verse 1
There is so much in the end of verse 1, but I want to offer a couple of verses earlier in Romans – Paul wanted the people to understand that they needed to offer their entire self – mind, body, spirit – all that is in a man, completely to God
Verse 13 – do not offer ANY PART to sin
Verse 19 – but offer yourself as a SLAVE to righteousness
I love the sermon on the mount – Chapter 5 of Matthew – Murder and Adultery (OT were outward sins), the sacrifice offering – Jesus took each a step further (both outward and inward)
Next Slide -- verse 2 – this is my dad’s favorite
Verse 2 Definitions – let’s review
Conforming – we all do it, or have done it in the past. It is where we allow ourselves to become part of something (outwardly) that we know as believers (or should know) is wrong (inwardly). We do it out of fear, or wanting to be accepted – we do it for various reasons. (Example – in a group talking about others, yet we do not defend the person not there)
Pattern of this world – simply whatever AGE or time period the reader is in. – the culture of that time!
Transformed – Does everyone remember Bill Bixby? He was a soft-spoken actor – and who would be become at times? The Incredible Hulk!! Something would usually tick him off on the inside – and it would result in a transformation on the outside!! That is the thought here – Paul is encouraging believers in Rome to let their lives be lived out in a way that outwardly expresses the Gospel.
So -- Both Conformation and Transformation are necessary for a Biblically renewed mind
Next Slide – Let me share 2 points about Renewal
So let’s consider two things today about renewal:
Renewal must be biblically motivated
Renewal will take time
My dad loves this verse – this is what he told me the other day – “I went from being conformed to what was politically correct, to what was biblically correct”.
**We all have opinions and beliefs – and we love to argue about them – and sometimes they match up to scripture, and sometimes they match up to the culture! Godly renewal must take into account the truths of God – remember that Paul thought it important enough to devote so much effort in getting that truth to the Romans!
So keeping in mind both an inward and outward expression are necessary components of RENEWAL – what are some practical ways for us to have our minds renewed?
One of my favorite hymns is titled “Turn your eyes upon Jesus” -- it says to ‘look full in his wonderful face, and the things of this world will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace’.
Next Slide: Turning our eyes upon Jesus is done when we spend time…………………..
Time in these areas – these are very important!!!
And over time – things for me began to change:
Abortion – Jeremiah’s calling; Mary/Elizabeth and John leapt in the womb (and others) – It became a baby**
Father/Husband/Leader for my family – I began to see more clearly what God had in mind for the family – Sally allowed me to lead, even in my weakness
But change takes time!
How many of you are manager’s or sales people? I have read where it can take numerous communications with employees to get them to change behavior – and how about the dreaded cold call. Experts say it take 7 plus calls to get in a door. So we as believers must be as persistent when applying these things:
Next Slide: Finish out verse 2 -- So what are some verses that encourage us in the importance of a transformed life – one that is seen outwardly?
Paul wants us to get practical – how can we apply verses 1 and 2 to our lives?
Consider these 6 points presented in the new testament on ways we can actively test and approve God’s transforming will
--1 Peter 5:3 -- ….’not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock’ (Dwayne example)
--Hebrews 13:7 -- ….’Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith’ (Fred Price)
--Philippians 4:9 – ‘what you have LEARNED and RECEIVED and HEARD and SEEN --- practice these things’ (‘sermon was for me today’)
--Philippians 3:17 – ‘Keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us’ (Mentoring/Discipling – we all need it – Care Groups are a great avenue)
--1 Corinthians 4:1-2 – ‘it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy’ (earned over time)
-- Mark 10:45 –”For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”
POINT – Each of the above verses are action verses – they give us insight on how we need to transform into an effective witness and servant of the Lord
DISTRACTIONS (we have them everywhere today) -- *they keep us from the transformation – the outward expression, the active service we should be giving to the Lord
AWANA – Felt board and puppet show – the real purpose they serve! – they are distractions for the kids – good ones, yet distractions.
Next Slide: We had some Care Groups over……..
Care Group leaders the other night over – I asked “What has been the most rewarding part of care group life, and the biggest challenge?
Answer – let me read “The sacrifice we do each week to meet and keep it going, has also grown us spiritually and has strengthened our marriage”
IN FACT – each said that their marriage had been strengthened as they have served together
Next Slide: So as we consider these passages in Romans, and a new year, and renewal in our lives, let’s consider some practical ways we can test God’s will in our service – so that we are most pleasing to him.
After 3rd point – mention how difficult it was for Sally and me to commit for a year – and it was the best thing we ever did in our lives (laughing at the same things)
--and our girls??? – I find it very interesting in how they speak about us now that they are older – rarely do I hear them ever talk about things they heard us SAY – it is normally something they saw us do. And we included them in much of what we did.
Serving and participating in care group life are two great ways to see renewal and transformation in our lives this year.
Next Slide: And let me close with one final verse – one of the greatest transforming / action based verses in the bible – and it is the Gospel as spoken by Paul
Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-8
Next Slide: So as we consider 2017, let’s commit as a church to walk in the path that brings Glory and Honor to Jesus!!
