Over the past 30 years, Santa Clara County has lost approximately 21,000 acres of agricultural land to residential development. In 2015 and 2016, the county received planning and funding grants totaling $200,000 from the California Strategic Growth Council's Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program to develop an agricultural plan and easement program. This led to the adoption of the Santa Clara Valley Agricultural Plan, which aims to protect working agricultural lands and craft a unified land use policy. In 2017, the county received over $15 million in additional grants to acquire conservation easements on around 251 acres of prime farmland, helping to strengthen regional food security, protect open space, and reduce greenhouse gases emissions long-term.

3) Treating methane and carbon dioxide as equivalent based solely on their 100-year global warming potential fails to capture their different impacts on temperature over time. Factoring in annual emission rates provides a better comparison.
