I Won’t Let You Go
The music video begins with a wide shot of James
Morrison lying on the end of his bed, in a room with
vintage interior and low level lightning. His costume
is neutral coloured with browns, beige and green. He
also wears a leather jacket. Which is placed on the
arm of the chair. His costume in his bedroom is a
cream jumper and grey tracksuit bottoms, which
suggests that he is depressed, lazy or sluggish. The
setting of the room has long curtains, that are dark
and slightly drawn. This suggests, that he wants to be
alone without disturbance, however the natural sun
light hitting his face shows that he has not totally
given up. However, through the centre window, he
later spots a girl, in which he uses as an incentive to
get over his depression with the support of someone
in a similar situation.

There is then a continuity editing cut to James
Morrison lying on the bottom of the bed, this could
mean he has disorganised thoughts, also it shows a
long shot of him lying on one side of the bed, with
him looking up at an empty place. This shows that
someone is missing from the other half; this leads the
viewer to believe that the two characters are linked.
The following shot jump cuts to a close up of the
artist lip-syncing, just to show that he is the artist, or
a tool of marketing the artist. However, the sun light
hitting the side of his face is used to show it is taking
place whilst the sun is rising, pragmatically implying
that it is a new hope, or a new beginning, i.e. a fresh
start for James Morrison.

The camera then tilts up to a young woman, to reveal
her wearing a delicate lace night dress, minimalistic
make up with slightly untamed light brown hair. This
is to show her vulnerability, her NVC of hugging
herself is to show she is cold or lost, and is an act of
self-security checking, possibly to re thinking her
thoughts. She then slowly kneels to the ground,
gradually falling to the floor as a symbol of despair or
defeat that she can’t cope with dealing with her
problem. She then rolls onto her back to look up to
the sky; there is then a series of parallel editing
between the two people, which suggests there is a
link between them. However the audience is
unaware what that link is.
The next close up is of James Morrison and the
mystery woman, with their foreheads and noses
touching, suggesting they have a close relationship,
this could lead the audience to believe she is the girl
who was missing in his bed. It then makes the
audience question ,why they are apart, what caused
their depression, what sort of relationship do they
have? Personally, because of the intimacy, I feel that
they may have had a romantic relationship that has
experienced a hard emotional blow, but they both
feel they can’t cope without each other. Therefore,
he tries to help her and patch things up, however
she avoids eye contact which also suggests she is too
emotional damaged to listen to him.
There is an aerial shot of the woman lying is slightly
to the left of the white line, this could symbolise
that the girl is not ‘on the straight and narrow’ and
is lost, or has given up on herself. Her hand on her
heart could symbolise she has suffered an
emotional blow and can’t see how she will
overcome it. There is continuous parallel editing
cuts between the pair, in which James is walking
towards the girl and she is toughing on her night
dress, clenching her heart. This again reinforces
that the pair had a strong loving relationship.
Spectators begin surrounding and overlooking
her lying on the floor, however she takes no
notice of the crowd, this symbolises the
pressure she feels, as if the whole word is
against her.

The next part of the narrative, is where James
Morrison comes to her rescues, and breaks
through the crowd; this is shown by a close up,
handy cam shot. The sun has also raised,
therefore this correlates to the new
equilibrium, that he is a going to become the
hero of the story, making him look masculine,
and more appealing to the female audience.
There is then another aerial shot, in which
James Morrison starts to come out of the
crowd, and bend down, then begins to lie
down beside her to try and console her. He
then clasps her hand and places it on his heart,
to show he understands her pain.

The finishing shot is of everyone lying on the
floor, which suggests that the purpose of the
video was to show that everyone can be
vulnerable and when the hardship gets too
much a simple gesture of understanding or
support is all that is needed in order to make
an individual feel slightly better. James
Morrison and the girl are the only people lying
together, which could be to symbolise that you
don’t have to take the world on, on your own.
