James Augustus Hicky established the Bengal Gazette in Calcutta in 1780, the first newspaper in India. Compared to modern newspapers, the Gazette was smaller in size with only 200 copies circulated among East India Company employees and Europeans. It included news, advertisements, stories, and commentary on social issues. Hicky used the paper to criticize the British administration in India, incurring the wrath of Governor General Warren Hastings. Hicky was imprisoned and the Gazette suppressed due to its anti-establishment views, though it helped establish journalism as a profession in India.
