“hazardous” in nature and carries various health risks. This hazardous
or biomedical waste includes:
o infectious waste cultures
o sharps
o pathological waste
o pharmaceutical
o Geno toxic o chemical and
o radioactive wastes
6. CPCB GUIDELINES FOR COVID-19 HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
• Based on current knowledge on COVID-19 and existing practices in
management of infectious waste generated in HCFs while treating
viral and other contagious diseases like HIV, H1N1, etc.
•These guideline will be update if needed
•Guidelines brought out by WHO, MoH& FW, ICMR, CDC and other
concerned agencies from time to time may also be referred.

store and keep separately in store room prior to handling over to staff of CBWTF or be
lifted directly from ward in to CBWTF collection van.
2. MANDATORY LABELING: BMW bags/containers from COVID-19 wards: labeled as “
COVID-19 Waste” CBWTFs to indentify for priority treatment and disposal upon
receipt.
3. SEPARATE COLOUR CODED: bins/bags/containers in wards and maintain proper
segregation of waste as per BMWM Rules as amended and CPCB guidelines on BMWM
Rules.
4. Double layered bags( 2 bags) use for collection of BMW so as to ensure adequate
strength and no leaks.
5. Use dedicated trolleys and collection bins with label “ COVID-19 Waste” to be pasted
on these items also.
6. Inner and outer surface of containers/bins/trolleys used for COVID-19 BMW- disinfect
with 1% Sodium Hypochlorite solution daily.

9. 1. COVERING LETTER TO CENTRAL POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD
• Duly signed by Concerned Authority
2. PARTICULARS OF THE OCCUPIER
• Name of the authorized occupier, operator of facility, Name of
the HCF, Address
• Address of Facility, telephone No., Email id, Website
• Ownership of HCFs
• Type of HCFs- Total Beds
• Details of the storage, treatment, transportation, processing and
disposal facility
MONTHLY REPORT COVID-19 HEALTH CARE FACILITY
10. • General waste not having contamination should be disposed as
solid waste as per SWM Rules 2016
• Depute dedicated sanitation workers separately for BMW, SW so
that waste can be collected and transferred timely to temporary
waste storage area.
GENERAL WASTE( NON COVID)
11. • FAECES from COVID-19 confirmed patient, who is unable to use
toilets and excreta is collected in diaper, must be treated as
BMW and should be placed in yellow bag/container.
• If a bedpan is used, then faeces to be washed into toilet and
cleaned with a neutral detergent and water, disinfected with
0.5% chlorine or 1% hypochlorite solution then rinsed with clean
water.
GENERAL WASTE( NON COVID)
12. PPEs: Goggles, face shield, splash proof apron, plastic coverall,
Hazmat suit, nitrile gloves into red bag.
SPECIFIC BMW ARTICLES DISPOSAL
13. PPEs: Collected used masks( triple layer mask and N95 mask), head
cover, shoe cover, disposable linen gown, non-plastic or semi
plastic coverall in yellow bags.
SPECIFIC BMW ARTICLES DISPOSAL
14. General solid waste (household waste) generated from quarantine centers or
camps should be handed over to waste collector identified by Urban Local Bodies
or as per the prevailing local method of disposing general solid waste.
-Biomedical waste if any generated from quarantine centers/camps should be
collected separately in yellow colored bags (suitable for biomedical waste
collection) provided by ULBs.
These bags can be placed in separate and dedicated dust-bins of appropriate size.
- Persons operating Quarantine camps/centers should call the CBWTF operator to
collect biomedical waste as and when it gets generated. Contact details of
CBWTFs would be available with Local Authorities.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF PERSONS OPERATING HOME
CARE FACILITIES
15. Persons taking care of quarantine home / Home-care should deposit biomedical
waste if any generated from suspected or recovered COVID-19 patients, by
following any of the following methods as may be arranged by ULBs;
- Hand over the yellow bags containing biomedical waste to authorized waste
collectors at door steps engaged by local bodies; or
- Deposit biomedical waste in yellow bags at designated deposition Centers
established by ULBs. The bag again be stored in yellow bag or container; or
- Handover the biomedical waste to waste collector engaged by CBWTF operator
at the doorstep.

DUTIES OF COMMON BIOMEDICAL WASTE
TREATEMENT FACILITY(CBWTF)
19. •CDC- risk of transmission COVID-19 through sewage is low: operators
treatment of STPs: no evidence
•Agencies: HCF/ isolations wards/operators of terminal sewage treatment
plants
•Agencies to ensure disinfection of treated wastewater as per prevailing
practices to inactivate corona viruses
•Operators of STPs- standard operation practices, practice basic hygiene
precautions, and wear PPEs
•COVID-19 pandemic- utilization of treated waste water in utilities with HCFs
may be avoided.
MANAGEMENT OF WASTE WATER FROM HCFs
20. • What type of container should I use for sharps?
Ans: White (Translucent) Puncture proof, Leak proof, Tamper proof
containers.
• Should Microbiology, biotechnology and other clinical laboratory waste be
pre-treated?
