Jackson was born in 1912 in Cody, Wyoming and studied art in New York City. He spent many years traveling around the country drawing and is known for developing the dripping technique of pouring and dripping paint onto canvases. Later he changed styles and returned to black and white works. He died at age 40 in a car accident. He met his wife Lee Krasner who became his wife.
