2. What is lathe
A machine for shaping wood, metal, or other
material by means of a rotating drive which
turns the piece being worked on against
changeable cutting tools.

3. What can be produced using a Lathe
• Shafts,Bushings,Sleeves,Bolts,Nuts,Pistons,Ra
ms,Pump,parts,Electric motor parts, Aircraft
parts, Train parts, Ship parts.

4. Hazards associated using a lathe
There are multiple
hazards when using a
lathe they can vary from:
• Clothing are caught or entangled in the moving parts of the lathe E.g. chucks, lead and
feed screws, drive gears and the work piece.
• Being hit by a lose objects like chuck keys, swarf and tools.
• Using the wrong tools or using them incorrectly and polishing techniques.
• Getting hit by a piece of the lathe that was not secured
• Exposed chuck can cause entanglement
• Using old or warn tools on the lathe which can cause tool failure or the tools becoming
projectiles.
• Removing swarf/cuttings from the machining with hands which can cause cuts or
infections.

5. What is a mill
• A milling machine is a drill designed to
machine metal, wood, and other solid
materials. Can be automated with a computer.
milling machines can be positioned in either
vertical or horizontal to carve out materials
based on a pre-existing design

6. What can be produced using a
mill?
- A mill can be used to produce many
things. An example of some things are;
Brackets, fasteners or they can even be
used to refine features on parts.

7. Hazards associated with using a mill
• Need to keep hands at a safe distance due to
rotating parts.
• Eye protection to prevent swarf in your eyes
• Don’t wear and jewellery in case it gets caught

8. What are the main differences
between a lathe and a mill
• Lathes spin the material, whereas a milling
machine uses a spinning tool for various
cuttings. A lathe has only 2 axis but a mill can
have 3,4 or 5
