2. Lathes and mills
What is a mill and a lathe
Mill & lathe safety
Hazards
And 3 examples that cane be made or types of
cuts made on both machines
3. What is a mill
• A milling machine is a vertical machine
• Tools are held into the spindle witch rotates
• the mill has different speed that are set as
rpm revs per minute
4. mill safety
• PPE (safety goggles, safety boots, overalls or
jacket and work trousers)
• Emergency switches
• Safety guard
5. Hazards associated with a mill
• The hazards associated are entanglement
where loose clothing or body part can get
caught up in the machine.
• Sharp edges on tools, work pieces and flying
swarf can cause cuts
• Slippery floors surfaces or loose items around
the machine can cause slips and trips
7. Hazards associated with a lathe
• The hazards associated are entanglement
where loose clothing or body part can get
caught up in the machine.
• Sharp edges on tools, work pieces and flying
swarf can cause cuts
• Slippery floors surfaces or loose items around
the machine can cause slips and trips
8. Lathe safety
• PPE (safety goggles, safety boots, overalls or
jacket and work trousers)
• Emergency switches
• Chuck Guard
9. What is a lathe
• A lathe is a machine which rotates the work piece on a axis
• It can perform various tasks such as cutting, sanding,
drilling, or deformation, facing, turning, with tools that are
applied to the work piece to create an object which has
symmetry about an axis of rotation. The tools are all used
manually while the material is moved
• Lathes can used in woodturning, metalworking, metal
spinning, thermal spraying, parts reclamation, and glass-working.
• The way to work out a lathes rpm is: S x 1000
• -----------
• d x 3.142
11. What each turning tool is used for
• Parting tool: this is used for putting a space in the material (shown on slide 2)
• Turning tool: this is used for shaving of small(0.1) –large (3mm) pieces of the
material
• Right handed turning tool: these are used turning down material's (e.g. wood and
metal)
• Radius turning form tool: the radius turning form tool is used for cutting curves into
the material
• Thread cutting tool: this is used to create a thread for a screw (this requires a lot of
experience to use)
• Chamfering tool: the Chamfering tool is used for creating chamfers
12. What can be produced using a lathe
• A lathe can be used to produce a variety of
different objects and components out of all kinds
of different materials including wood and metal.
• On the left are some chess pieces turned using a
metal lathe.
• Lathes can also be used to make components for
products for example below is a watchmaker
preparing a component made out of copper.
14. The difference between the 2
• Lathes and milling machines are both used for
cutting raw material, but they have very
different ways of doing so. Lathes spin the
material, whereas a milling machine uses a
spinning tool for various cutting operations.
