This document discusses IUPAC nomenclature for non-branching aliphatic hydrocarbons, specifically alkanes and alkenes. It defines alkanes as saturated hydrocarbons with only single carbon-carbon bonds and the general formula CnH2n+2, and alkenes as unsaturated hydrocarbons containing carbon-carbon double bonds and the general formula CnH2n. The objectives are for students to be able to identify the differences between alkanes and alkenes based on their structures, relate this to the octet rule and carbon structure, and draw basic structures of these compounds.
