6. Networking Tips
Networking is a marathon, not a sprint. Networking is another word for relationship building and just like any other
relationship, it may take some time to develop. Of course a relationship started today can help you out as soon as
tomorrow, but its OK and just as valuable to network today and reap the benefits months down the line.
Think about what you want out of the relationship
Yes, we’re all looking for an internship, but think smaller. Would you want to have an informational interview with
this person to learn more about what they do on a day-to-day basis? Would you want to see their office on an agency
tour? Do you need feedback on your resume?
Ask about them
Everybody loves to talk about themselves, so ask questions. How did you start out in the field? What did you study in
college? Have you always been in PR? What type of clients do you work on?
Add value
Instead of asking if their hiring or looking for interns, think about how you could help his/her organization. If he/she
works at an event-planning firm ask if they ever need an extra set of hands to set up or work the events. This would be
a great way to get a foot in the door. If his/her firm conducts a lot of research remind them that you know a network of
college students who would love to participate in focus groups.
Don’t forget to grab a card
Be sure to get a business card before you end your conversation. This is helpful so you can follow up after the event.
Don’t forget to connect with them on Twitter and LinkedIn in addition to sending an e-mail follow up. If they don’t
have a card, ask if you can look them up on their company’s website or on LinkedIn.
Relax
They are just people after all, and they have all been in your shoes before. Most would love to help you out if you
show the initiative. If you’re relaxed and comfortable you’ll be fine!
The more practice you have networking the easier it will come. Try to take advantage of any opportunities to build
relationships with professionals – like this one!
