Leigh Ann Personal Education Experience How I got to this point?
Introduction of what this session is all about Goal for the day – That you come away with at least ONE new thing you can take back and start using in your room A walk through a day in my classroom A combination of my education, textbooks, things I’ve learned from other teachers, workshops, found online, and my spin Stop me if you have questions Active participation encouraged Examples from my classroom on the tables feel free to explore When you leave here today I will have cards available for you – access to the presentaion via our school website – every picture, video, title is a link to give you examples and directions to the activities
The start of every day Draw a picture, write words to go with pictures No prompts, no help Freedom to imagine I check May take 3 days to finish one page Develops pre-writing, writing, fine motor, phonemic awareness, creativity Leads me to know what to teach when we are writing… Samples: Gracie (early in year… name) Anna (2 nd quarter… sounding out words) Peyton (3 rd quarter… word wall usage, sounding out… missing capitals, etc.) I write on it how I would change it Ctrl P (to get pen) use left mouse to write (write capital A, add a period) E key to erase writing, Ctrl A (to get rid of pen and make arrow reappear) Chase (3 rd quarter… sounding out… we had focused on ‘ck’ sound) Shaurya (4 th quarter… spacing, capitalization, etc.)
Meeting math concepts (patterns, counting, money, time, and pre-reading skills, pre-writing skills – ask WHY a lot) Estimate Jar and Surveys – more about that in Math Class letter language concepts (letter writing, letter formation, sentence structure, and more) Let’s write a letter press B key to black screen Now we will write a letter to our audience on the chart paper (interactive) when finished press the B key again to restore our presentation Have someone write date upon entering Discuss date Write about being here… Thank you for coming Focus on sounding out… What do you think that starts with? Do I need to leave a space here? What kind of puncutation does this sentence need? Volunteers to come up after and find Capital Letters
Let’s Play Funny flashers (link to video of class playing) – have sample available I Have/Who Has (link to photo of samples… let’s play with color words) – have multiple samples available Flash-a-word (link to separate slide-show so we can play – slides need to be clicked to advance) 5 Clues Game (link to video… after video discuss how we progress to having our own paper, then playing Make-a-word… play make a word with “we” -- be, me, he, she, the) Class Books (show examples – moving from simple: names, color word, one fill-in, full sentences) I could go on for hours here… these are my 5 favorite!

Saint Contest To involve Kindergarten with what the rest of the school is doing at that time of the year 8 th Grade has a Patron Saint Contest… research saints, create skits, reports, bulletin boards Older grades are more involved We always just watched the boards go up and commented on how nice they looked This year we got involved! Took a photo of one part of each board and lined them up down the side of paper Introduced each baord by reading the name of the saint for that board Demonstrated how to find the photo on one of the boards and write the name of that saint beside the photo Then they were on their own… paired up with a friend CLIPBOARDS! – so official!

Advent So focused on Christmas (Santa) Try to focus on the real reason for Christmas Vast majority of my Christmas décor is religious (advent wreaths, manger scenes…) Slowly built our manger scene by creating mosaic pieces during center time... Outlined the figures Children chose colors and worked together… making 1-2 pieces a day Use candles to “be the light” for others (reward good behavior)

Quiet Time get brain and body ready for rest of day Reflection Rejuvenation YOGA/MeMoves Quiet/Soft Music Bags My time to get caught up… complete individual assessments… students can finish work from AM Let’s Take a Break! (Palm Tree)
Estimate Jar (number formation, counting 10’s, count on, estimation, add to Math Meeting) Surveys (reading, writing, letter formation, compare/contrast, number formation, adding/subtracting, problem solving) (Survey before you leave… Would you visit Miss Judy’s classroom again? Yes/No – tally marks/comments on the back) Games (at center time with volunteers – cover correct number mats (snowmen and marshmallows), dice add/subtract mats (spider webs and spiders), build your own games (leprechauns), roll-a- games (groundhog) – show samples – choose volunteers to come and play -- End of the day activities (Table Time) – tangrams, pattern blocks, geoboards…
Big centers Add little bits at time Picture labels – to organize the room Basket centers – everything you need to complete the task in the basket My way to incorporate science, social studies, and art And to reinforce language arts and math skills I have 5 baskets one for each subject… we rotate each day… by end of the week students have done 5 activities revolving around a central theme Example: Spring Science: Water cycle bracelets Math: comparing roses/raindrops Art: paper plate flowers Langauge: Class Book: Spring Social: Read/discuss story with parent volunteer… take an AR test Shortened week? – only 4 centers, etc… Great way to use parent volunteers When finished with basket activity can have “play” time in big centers
