2. INTRODUCTION
• In 1966 Government decided to merge three public sectors tourism bodies into
one complete corporation with the objective of securing coordination in tourism
planning and in the policy.
• Those three corporations were:- Hotel Corporation of India Limited, India Tourism
Corporation Limited , India Tourism Transport Undertaking.
• In October, 1966 Government established India Tourism Development Corporation
(ITDC) under the provision of companies act 1956 with an authorized capital of five
crores the capital was financed by the Central Government.
• It is the prime mover in the development , promotion and expansion of Tourism in
India.

7.  Ashok Group of Hotels :-
• The Ashok chain is the largest hotel chain in public sector
undertaking. Originally it was providing accommodation at
those place where the private sector afraid to invest in the
lodging sector. Now it runs hotels all over the country. ITDC
hotels industry ranges from Five Star to lodge. It has thirty-
eight properties at twenty-eight permanent tourist places.
These properties are divided into elite, classic and comfort
hotels as ‘ Samrat’ in New Delhi, Kaniska in New Delhi,
Ashok in Jaipur.

14.  Duty and Tax Free Shops (Shopping division).
• ITDC is the pioneer of Duty free Business in India. With the changing times,
they have also changed our business focus from operating Duty free shops
only at the International Airports to expanding it to other locations such as
Seaports etc.
• Currently they have Duty Free Shops at Coimbatore International Airport.
They are also present at Chennai, Haldia, Kolkata, Goa, Paradip,
Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Mumbai seaports.
• These shops have World’s best-known Spirits, wines and top selling brands
of cigarettes and made in India products like handicrafts etc. as well as a
large assortment of teas at most competitive prices.

16.  Engineering and Consultancy
• ITDC Provides unique consultancy services to develop camping
tourism and adventure tourism. The corporation has already run
successfully tourist camps at Narwar, Jaisalmer, Bir (HP),Daman
and Diu, Andamans and Coorg (Karnataka)
• It provides Engineering consultancy services in the field of civil ,
structure, plumbing, air-conditioning and mechanical disciplines.
• It provides Architectural interior designing, Designing of
industrial kitchen, including preparation of layouts and kitchen
equipment.

• ITDC provides catering operations in Vigyan Bhawan and Hyderabad
House.
• ITDC has been successfully handling the management controls, which
includes catering and upkeep services of Hyderabad House (Which comes
under the jurisdiction of Ministry of External Affaires) .
• ITDC has an exclusive VVIP catering unit, operational since last 30 years.
