Health care decision makers need the skills to find, appraise and implement research evidence to make informed decisions. This is true whether the decisions are being made by the public, patients, health practitioners, health service managers and policy makers or collaboratively. Most health professionals and members of the public do not currently have the skills to do this. EBM, EBHC and EBP courses are available but they are few and far between and usually too expensive or geographically distant for most people to attend. To address the skills deficit in this area the EBHC MOOC group was started in November 2013 by members of ISEHC and participants at the 2013 EBHC Teachers & Developers Conference in Sicily. Our intention is to develop a cross-institutional, international, collaborative MOOC to teach EBHC skills and foster Communities of Evidence-Based Practice worldwide. We will share existing materials and apply for funding to work together to produce and evaluate high quality materials and develop and run open-access distant learning courses.

Chapter 2: Decision Making—The Surprising Reasons People Say Yes and No Picking his way through the cramped ballroom, with people-filled padded chairs all askew, there was no clear route. Obstacles, however, were not this man’s primary concern. On his face, you could see his mind racing—searching for what he would say once he was in front of the crowd. Few people like public speaking, but this situation seemed even more torturous than usual. He found his standing spot, turned, and faced the crowd. “I have traveled three hours round-trip every day to attend this session. I’ve driven dangerous roads and in heavy traffic. You are a talented and knowledgeable group. I have learned from you, and you have learned from me. And I sure could use the money to help pay for gas. Please, please. Pick me!” That scene played out in a Calgary persuasion workshop during which I asked three volunteers to vie for a single, crisp $100 bill by convincing the audience to individually award them the money. The idea: Whoever makes the most compelling case, winning the affections of the crowd, walks away with the cash and the bragging rights. Participants are allowed to make their case in any way they deem appropriate, with one exception: They can’t share the money or materially benefit the crowd in any way. (I’ll buy you all drinks!) Adding to the pressure, I give them just four minutes to develop their case and only 25 seconds to present it. What would you say if you were in this situation? This activity mirrors business life today in many ways. You are often in competition with others for the account, the promotion, the project. You must think on your feet and be able to put together compelling arguments fast, and you might not have much time to state your case. Sometimes you need to do all this—especially in peer-to-peer persuasion situations—without offering your target some sort of material gain. Not an easy assignment, to be sure. The most interesting aspect of this workshop activity, though, is not the people vying for the money—it’s the people deciding who will earn the money. You may think that people are carefully analyzing participants’ arguments, weighing the pros and the cons to rationally decide who gets their votes. That’s not what’s happening. At all. The surprising truth is that most people have no idea why they say yes. After a bitter and protracted custody battle, declining mental health and three subsequent suicide attempts, I was diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Though fearful of the consequences of exposing myself, I decided I would turn my life around and help others who had suffered as I had. The next few years were spent testifying to members of Congress, speaking at local support groups and at thought leader conferences to offer my support, hope and encouragement that recovery was possible. My YouTube Channel grew to 700,000 views, I published six short books, one of which was translated into Japanese, and developed a certification training program for others who wanted to peer coach. During this time, I was estranged from most of my five children. The pain of the separation pushed me even further to learn how to stay healthy. My goal was to be the very best mother I could be should they ever return to my care. After many years, I was reconciled with all my children and got married. I gave birth to my son, Hunter, at the age of 48, and had my twin girls at the age of 50. My story is a story of redemption and second chances and this workshop is about the nuts and bolts of what one can DO give themselves a fresh start and live a new, intentional life. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications.
