9. History
• There is evidence of continuous human habitation in present-day Thailand from 20,000 years
ago to the present day. The earliest evidence of rice growing is dated at 2,000 BCE.
• The culture of Thailand has evolved greatly over time, from its relative isolation during
the Sukhothai era, to its more contemporary Ayutthaya era, which absorbed influences
from all over Asia. Indian, Chinese, Burmese, Khmer and other Southeast Asian influences are
still evident in traditional Thai culture.
• From about the 10th to the 14th centuries, Thailand saw a period of Khmer domination over a
large portion of what is now Central Thailand, as well as a southward expansion of Thai tribes.

11. Naresuan’s Elephant
Battle
• Back when Thailand was known as
the Kingdom of Ayutthaya,
King Naresuan’s reign was marked by one of the
most legendary battles in Thai history. Atop his el
ephant, the king called out to the
crown prince of Burma Mingya Swa to face him in
single combat.
He accepted and Naresuan killed his opponent, wi
nning the battle that secured Thailand’s later victo
ry in the
war. Whilst today elephant riding is hugely frowne
d upon, it’s one of the
most enduring stories from this era of
the country’s history – and
one that they’re fiercely proud of.

12. The Naga
• You might notice statues at Thai temples
that look similar to a snake or dragon, but in
fact they are neither; they are Naga. Semi-
divine beings that feature in both Buddhism
and Hinduism, Naga are believed by locals
to live in the Mekong river. More
interestingly, they’re thought to be the cause
of the Naga fireball phenomenon, which
sees fireballs rise from the supposedly-
inhabited Mekong river high into the air. Not
to worry, though; Naga are guardian-type
figures who keep away bad spirits, so they’re
worth having around — just be careful if
you’re going for a swim in the Mekong.
