This study examined water quality in a small residential wetland in Spokane, Washington. Water samples were taken from sites along the drainage gradient leading to the wetland and within the wetland. Concentrations of ions like magnesium and sodium increased from upstream to within the wetland, likely due to evapoconcentration. While concentrations of major ions accumulated in the wetland, concentrations of potential heavy metals like lead and zinc remained below EPA aquatic life standards. The results indicate the wetland shows no evidence of geochemical hazards from surrounding anthropogenic activities like vehicle traffic or land use.

Surface analyses may not be representative of the bulk composition due to corrosion effects. Different instruments require calibration and may not produce directly comparable results without standards. pXRF can provide an initial analysis of components but more accurate analysis of alloy composition requires other techniques on cleaned samples.Research proposal

Laboratory testing will be conducted to measure metal content in goldfish tissues. The stress responses and toxicity levels caused by metal nanoparticles will be assessed through statistical analysis of histopathological changes and behavior alterations in goldfish. The risk posed to aquatic species, environments, and ecosystems by the presence of these metals will also be estimated. Quantitative surveys of experts and secondary data from past studies will be used to analyze bioaccumulation and toxicity effects on goldfish in the selected study area.

The Assessment of heavy metals distribution and their likely adverse effects in underground
resources of Nnewi town of Anambra State within the sedimentary basin of south eastern Nigeria due to
industries has been studied. The instrument used for data collection includes topographic map, geologic map
aerial photograph, satellite image and fracture maps of Anambra drainage Basin. Ten (10) under ground water
samples from borehole, springs and hand dug wells were collected, this was followed by laboratory studies of
the water samples for the identification of heavy metals present. The result of the analysis of ten(10) water
samples shows that chromium, copper, cadmium and zinc were observed to be high while orgon, mercury,
molybdenum, nickel, lead, zirconium were not detected. The findings also show that cadmium (cd) was not in
some places such as Nnewichi, Otollo and Umudim. Villages in Nnewi town shows an abnormal distribution of
high chromium (cr) copper (cu) and zinc (zn). Above permissible limit, Cadmium causes cancer of the lungs,
and high blood pressure, while chromium causes kidney damage, liver damage, circulatory and nerve tissue
damage. Copper causes anemia, intestinal irritation, while zinc causes growth retardation, delayed sexual
maturation, infection susceptibility and diarrhea. It was suggested that chemical analysis of water should be
carried out periodically in the area since groundwater is subject to seasonal changes.

Cockle Creek Sediments Assessment Project
This study analyzed sediment cores from five sites along Cockle Creek in New South Wales, Australia to assess lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) levels. X-ray fluorescence detected increasing numbers of elements from upstream to downstream sites. No Pb was detected. ICP analysis found higher average Pb (284.68 mg/kg vs 226.12 mg/kg) and Zn (683.86 mg/kg vs 587.96 mg/kg) levels in deeper sediments. Pb levels were below 600 mg/kg at all sites except the bottom half of Site 5 sediment. Zn levels exceeded Australian guidelines at all sites. The results were consistent with prior studies conducted nearby.

Fossils
Radiometric dating uses the decay of radioactive isotopes to determine the age of fossils. Certain atoms, like uranium-238, decay over time into daughter products like lead-206. By measuring the ratio of parent and daughter isotopes in a sample, its age can be calculated. Fossils are also found in sedimentary rock layers, which can be relatively dated to determine ages. A combination of relative dating and radiometric techniques are commonly used to date most fossils.
