Muhammad died in 632 AD without appointing a successor, leading to disagreement over leadership. This resulted in the formation of the two main sects of Islam - Sunnis and Shias. Sunnis believe Abu Bakr was the rightful successor and make up 80% of Muslims, while Shias believe it was Ali and are centered in Iran. There remain tensions between the sects over religious interpretations and leadership.

• Muhammad died in 632 A.D., after being
poisoned by a woman of the Jewish city of
Khaibar which he had conquered and
beheaded the leaders.
• He made no arrangements concerning who
would succeed him.
• Consequently, there was disagreement over
who would be his successor.

• His close associate Umar nominated Abu Bakr
and he was made first caliph.
• Some of Muhammad’s companions insisted that
he had identified Ali, his cousin and son-in-law
as his successor.
• The Muslims divided into a number of sects who
had their own ideas as to successor ship.
• Ultimately 2 main sects appeared, Sunni’s who
held most power and recognize Abu Bakr and
Shias who recognized Ali and opposed them.

• Today in the Middle East, Iran and Syria have a Shia
government and Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States
have a Sunni one.
• Sunni’s rely heavily on the practices of the so called
prophet and his teachings (sunna).
• Shia’s see their ayatollas as a reflection of god on
earth. They look for the 12th and final Imam to appear
some day and fulfil the divine will.
• Sunni’s accuse Shias of heresy while Shia point out
that Sunni dogmatism has led to extremist sects.
• About 80 percent of Muslims are Sunni.

obey men or risk being beaten.” Q 4:34
• “A woman is worth one half of a man and

including prepubescent girls and can own sex
slaves” Q 4:3; 65:4; 4:24.

• Honor Killings
• An honor killing or honour killing (see spelling
differences) is the homicide of a member of a family
by other members, due to the perpetrators' belief
that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon
the family, or has violated the principles of a
community or a religion, usually for reasons such as
refusing to enter an arranged marriage, being in a
relationship that is disapproved by their family,
having sex outside marriage, becoming the victim of
rape, dressing in ways which are deemed
inappropriate, engaging in homosexual relations and
leaving Islam for another religion.

• It is difficult to know how many honor killings
occur in Islamic cultures since most are not
prosecuted. Under Shariah law they are
justified.
• A number have occurred in the US and the
perpetrators have been prosecuted.
• In October 2009 Noor Almaleki was run down in
broad daylight by her father who was upset that
she was too westernized and would not accept
an arranged marriage.

• 12th Imam – Muhammad al-Mahdi,
according to Shiite clerics (Iranian) was born
in 869 A.D., has not died and is in hiding
awaiting the time when the world is wracked
in utter chaos and war to appear with Jesus
to implement peace under world-wide Islam.
• Sunnis also believe he will appear at such a
time, but that he is not yet born.
