the development of free, online professional
learning modules that support educators in

learning and promoting creativity, innovation,
and critical thinking; integration of subject
knowledge; and instructional leadership and
coaching

developing free, online CCSS-aligned
teaching strategies embedded in units of

the CCSS
• The free lesson plans and units will be
housed on the NYC DOE website, and will
be searchable by keyword, grade level,
subject area, and Common Core Learning

• Utah has enacted legislation that
encourages districts to use free digital
materials
• The Utah State Department of Education is
currently developing open textbooks

  • 3. ‘Open’ and the Common Core Key drivers and challenges • Vision for the commons and shared standards, and need for skills-building and supports • Increased awareness around technology and digital content, and decreased education funding • Policy changes at State and District levels policy around content, and uncertainty around implementation
  • 5. Are educators prepared to use an open digital library?
  • 6. Are teachers finding the resources they need?
  • 7. How are teachers creating shareable resources? Using Open Author to create and remix OER
  • 8. How to evaluate for OER Quality? Achieve tool for evaluating resources on quality dimensions Rubric dimensions: 1.Quality of explanation of the subject matter 2.Utility of the materials designed to support teaching 3.Quality of assessments 4.Quality of technological interactivity 5.Quality of instructional and practice exercises 6.Opportunities for deeper learning

Qualitative Reflections from Educators User comments on evaluated resources • All qualitative comments can be exported to a csv file for content analysis • Comments can provide insight into needed improvements to the resource, what is good about the resource, and ways the resource can be used in the classroom
  • 14. How Might We Leverage OER to Address Challenges? • Identify resources relevant to CCSS and select exemplars for immediate use • Align resources to the appropriate Common Core standard(s) • Evaluate resource quality • Develop an easy-to-use organization system for educators
  • 15. • The CA Department of Education will oversee the development of free, online professional learning modules that support educators in delivering CCSS-aligned curriculum • Topic areas include: CCSS overview; instructional strategies for supporting student learning and promoting creativity, innovation, and critical thinking; integration of subject knowledge; and instructional leadership and coaching Examples of What the States are Doing California, OER and the Common Core
  • 16. Examples of What the States are Doing New York, OER and the Common Core • NYC educators and national experts are developing free, online CCSS-aligned teaching strategies embedded in units of study to support schools in implementing the CCSS • The free lesson plans and units will be housed on the NYC DOE website, and will be searchable by keyword, grade level, subject area, and Common Core Learning Standard
  • 17. Examples of What the States are Doing Utah, OER and the Common Core • Utah has enacted legislation that encourages districts to use free digital materials • The Utah State Department of Education is currently developing open textbooks aligned to the CCSS
  • 18. “Open” and the Common Core Next Practices that address challenges and needs •Collections of freely available, sharable resources aligned to the new standards •Ability to quickly vet and organize new resources •Clear method and location for organizing CCSS resources •Collaborative approaches for resource creation and improvement •Project leaders, district administrators, state curriculum developers and teachers are engaged
