The students tested an unknown specimen over three days to determine if it showed signs of life. They observed it under a microscope, placed it in water, salt water, soil and a CO2 indicator. It did not change in any environment or grow. Under the microscope, it appeared to be crystals and rock with no cells. They concluded the specimen is not living since it did not meet the criteria of having cells, growing, responding to its environment or releasing CO2.
