2. Universities urgently need to strengthen their efforts to help
solve the pressing problems on this planet as laid out
succinctly in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
René Schwarzenbach and Guido Schmidt-Traub (SDSN); ISCN-GULF report 2017
This can only be achieved by a joint effort
of the top universities around the world
The”vehicle” is, of course, ISCN!
Stockholm 2018
3. A glimpse at the past
(2007-2018):
2007: Born in Switzerland (EPFL/ETHZ); since then: Annual ISCN Conferences,
Secretariat operated by Sustainserv Inc.
2010: ISCN-GULF Sustainable Campus Charter (presented at the WEF Davos)
2016: Turning into a “real organisation”: Nonprofit Association under Swiss law,
headquartered at EPFL with a Board (co-host members 7 (+1) and an
Advisory Committee (elected members + co-host representatives)
2018: Members take “ownership”: ISCN Sustainable Campus Charter (no GULF!)
Good to know: Currently, operation funded entirely by co-host and regular
member fees

• Develop further and implement the strategic plan
• Rethink the governance of the network
• Foster projects that increase collaborations
• Strive for additional funds
• Increase the number of member universities, particularly in the
southern hemisphere
• Keep the present enthusiasm going !!!!!!!!!!!
7. ”So, Lets further develop ISCN into becoming
THE leading network for advancing sustainable
transformation within universities
around the world!”
8. The next important steps happen with all of you
right here and right now in Sao Paulo!

To show where we’ve come from over the years as we have been meeting and deepening our connections. This next phase of ISCN can focus on accelerating collaborations and action for sustainable development.
