This document compares codes of ethics for professional translators to emerging codes in non-professional community translation contexts. It finds that while professional codes address issues like competence and confidentiality, community codes emphasize shared values and explicit community visions. Community codes also detail infractions and sanctions more than professional codes. Overall, the document argues that community translation is developing its own implicit codes, and reveals how these alternative approaches address some gaps and conflicts in professional codes through innovations like self-regulation and strong mentoring.
